Re: Space Saving A/V Entertainment For Those So Inclined........

First post! Brazilian student taking my master's in Japan

Don't have a skoolie but I LOVE the ingenuity from you folks. Congratulations to all of you!

I don't remember name/price of the object I have in mind, but the other day I saw this little box. You just put a hard disk inside and connect it directly to the TV. Seemed to be pretty nice!

Just sharing the thought in case some knows what I am talking about.

Cheers,
Diogo

It's not Tivo - Tivo records TV so you can watch it at a later time. It's basically an external hard drive with a media player built in, so that you can watch downloaded movies/TV shows as well as play music on your TV. You can also rip your home movies to it, and store 100's of movies on the drive. Here's a link to one.. http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/media-giant/ ... 261222.php I've got basically the same thing with a modded xbox.

Yes, that's it!

Although the one I saw was just the shell plus remote control, which could allow upgrades. Glad I could help

Cheers,
Diogo

A modded xbox is great for this purpose. All you need is an old Xbox (less than $100 bucks) and a mod chip ($20 bucks) you can use the Ethernet port on the Xbox to plug into a router and watch videos from your computers hard drive on your TV and play music on your stereo. I've had a modded xbox for about 3 years and use it all the time... I have over 100 movies & TV shows, as well as 8500 MP3's at my fingertips in the living room.

Plus as an added bonus you can play games on it... not that I do very often.

Re: Space Saving A/V Entertainment Idea (UPDATED)

This is an interesting thread which can encompass a lot of ideas.

I am a computer junkie and will have to have a computer in my bus. That means a laptop. I figured I'd use that laptop for other things as well, including GPS. Has anyone used a laptop on their bus with a camera as a back-up monitor system?

I'm sure there are lots of other things one could do along these lines.

ever power your projector from a modified sine wave inverter? I'm just curious if it'll work. I have a dlp projector, and an inverter, but never tried it.

Re: Space Saving A/V Entertainment Idea (UPDATED)

The xbox hard drive is just a standard hard drive, I've seen 1TB drives for under $100 bucks now days. An old x-box can be found for probably $80 bucks or so... then you need the mod-chip $20 then you install new software & you're all set...

Easier option is to find a moded xbox for sale, similar to this one http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/for/960656851.html I don't know this guy or anything, I just did a quick search on my local craigslist for "modded xbox"

Re: Space Saving A/V Entertainment Idea (UPDATED)

If you are not connected to shore power then then a dedicated hardware-based player would probably be more energy efficient (here's a few from Google Shopping). I'm guessing the external hard drive enclosures that can play videos don't use much power. There's many out there (even Western Digital has one now). Another option is something like an Archos portable media player. They have their own screens for portablility but also output to TV's. They have internal hard drives and also have PVR docking stations use it like a TiVo.

Just my $.02

I have decided to cloud my mind even more. I decided to go to the local travel trailer store and walk thru their units. Wish we had an RV store store here but I took what I could get. It gives you a lot of ideas on how to build your home to another level.

Re: Space Saving A/V Entertainment Idea (UPDATED)

a lot of us do similar stuff before going over seas, i have a few hours of you tube videos, movies, tons of music, and porn. and now with 1tb drives going for only $100 it's easy to have two of these loaded down with stuff. and just connect it to a lcd tv and you're set. this was actually part of my plan for my party/burningman bus. and have wireless router setup as well for sharing of pics i've taken at the event and to get others as well.
