Spray foam fire concerns

We always knew foam is more flammable, but then saw this video.

What are you guys doing to make sure you have a sufficient thermal barrier?

That is a bit scary.

I may have to rethink my insulation method and if I go with spray polyurethane insulation perhaps add a layer of fire retardant material or use a fire retardant wall covering.

Thank you for sharing that.b

I'm no fire marshal or expert. Does Your Spray Foam Insulation Need a Thermal or Ignition Barrier?
This link indicates a 1/4" wood barrier is adequate.

Yea, it's all very confusing. Technically that link says 1/4" wood is good enough for an ignition barrier, not a thermal barrier. According to safety codes, thermal barriers are what you want to have around actual living spaces. Ignition barriers are acceptable in attics, seemingly because they are separate from living spaces and often have a thermal barrier between them?

I'm not really sure. I know there are a lot of building codes that are legitimate and extremely important to follow, I know there are others that are BS. I don't know enough about this one.

Thoughts are still welcome from anyone who feels strongly one way or the other!

For anyone interested in this topic, here is a good article that goes into detail about spray foam, approved thermal and ignition barriers, and alternate assemblies that can be used in some situations.

Fire concerns are legit. The guy who sprayed my bus said there was a fire retarder chemical in the foam.

Yea, I would have bought the fire retardant version of the kit I got if I had seen this first. Intumescent paint seems to work well, but that could add to the expense a lot.

Any chance anyone here has experience with intumescent paint for fireproofing stuff?
