Stock underbody storage weight limit?

Our 2003 Bluebird has an underbody storage compartment at the left rear. This is a perfect place for locating our 6500w generator, but was wondering if others have discovered how much weight these boxes can hold? The depth and width is fine, but I will have to open up above the box for more height.

Anyone done something similar?

Dave

I look forward to seeing replies.

I called Bluebird and asked the same question. They had no answer for me.

That's odd, I'd think their engineers would know how much weight the compartments can handle.

I wonder if they're just tired of getting school bus questions from individuals with second hand buses. They'd have to have some idea what amount of weight can go in there I'd think.
At least ya tried Steve!

FWIW the bluebird underside bins don't look as beefy as the ones on my Ward were. The Ward's would haul anything you could fit in there without a thought.

How much does your gen weigh?
Mine at 6500 watts weighs almost 500 lbs.
Maybe use the box you have but support the genny on vibrationless hangers and keep the sides of the box but cut the bottom out for fitting convenience.
I doubt those lockers would handle that kind of weight and bouncy abuse from driving.
The door would be easily fit to match the opening in front you need.

Just my thoughts

I'm not familiar with that set up but, my 91 Bluebird AARE has four storage doors. They open into one big compartment that goes all the way across. There was no bracing of any kind. I added four braces that go over the frame, evenly spaced in the middle.

I'm guessing it weighs about 250lbs. Two people can manage to lift it up, but it's a chore. I'll look at adding some bracing and lowering the floor of the box, good idea.

Just remember because you can add 2-300 pounds in the understorage boxs when parked
Thats alot when the truck is bouncing up and down the road. I had a 3 car trailer that the decks would crack the welds every few month from the cars bouncing.
