That is a great question!
I am not sure what people have done, but I am sure that many have done it successfully. They and their pictures will be more helpful than me.
Having said that, I would put a piece of the floor surface 90 decgrees down, facing out. If it can be mitered and glued, good, if not then a strip of angle, or stair nosing to cover and take abuse would work.
Raising my floor 2” is. Going to create a similar problem for me with my top step being higher than the others.
I could add to the two down, but not the bottom because it would crash my service door.
