Could metal roofing be used?
I'm wondering the same about my shower - looking for a look I'll love, but I'm a bit resistant to the weight of using tile due to the cement board.
I haven't given this idea much thought, but I did find this :

I started hanging the Hydro-Block board. So easy to work with. Cuts like drywall. Super light.
