Transporting my New Bus Home from Ohio

Hi,

I just bought a bus in Ohio. I’ve been dreaming of this for years and finally found an awesome deal on an appropriately sized bus. Now I need to get it home... and I live in CA. I’ve seen other threads from Ohio residents on some of the issues they have had bringing their bus home. Does anybody have any insight on how I can get temporary tags from the state of Ohio and legally drive my bus home across the country? Any advice helps. Thank you!!!

If you have all the paperwork, register it with CA DMV.

where in ohio did you get it?

with a signed title you can just go to the DMV and get a temporary tag for it... maybe its different because I live here? you dont need to title it in ohio.. it was easy for me to get a temp plate for my Superior after i got it home with just a trip permit from the west coast

once the back of the title is signed and notarized here in Ohio, you can go to the BMV office and get a 45 day temp tag, you do not need to be a resident

We bought the bus in Gallipolis, Ohio. I have been waiting to get the title transferred until I knew whether or not transferring it to CA would effect getting temp plates from Ohio. Thanks for the info!!!!

if you get a CA title, then you will not be able to get a temp tag in ohio, the temp tag has to be bought before the title is in your name, after it has been signed over to you on the back

yep, kubla has it right. in ohio a temp tag is issued to allow you to drive for 45 days and gives time to transfer the title to your name.. you will take that signed ohio title to the DMV in california.. and will likely need to get it converted to RV there as if I remember the only thing exempt from emissions are motor homes or classic cars.. in ohio esp gallipolis there are no inspections so the bus will be non emission compliant for california as a bus... I would think to get a california title they would want to tsee the vehicle so they can verify the VIN....

Yes, the CA emissions issue was my first concern when I read this.
