Venting an Eccotemp L5 propane water heater

This started in another thread, but I think it's worth separating out. This thread is intended to be specific to those cheap Eccotemp L5s that many of us are using.

That is a nice tight way to duct that Eccotemp L5! How is it working? How hot does the exhaust get? What is that foil? Is it holding up well?

I'm looking to do something similar to mine, but I went a slightly different way. I was planning (and have partially built) a powered vent hood that goes just above the unit. The fan is triggered by a heat switch. The benefit of using a powered vent hood is that the exhaust gas in the flue is cooler since it is mixed with ambient air. However, your technique is much simpler.

Ol Trunt, I believe you did something similar, no? Care to chime in?

Here is a related thread discussing the pros and cons of tankless water heaters for anyone who is interested: http://www.skoolie.net/forums/f13/ta...r-11400-3.html
