What is my engine and transmission?
How can I find out what engine and transmission is in my bus?
I have a 1990 International Carpenter with a greenish looking paint coloring the engine.
I’ve never seen an engine (diesel) painted green that wasn’t a Detroit, and I’ve never seen a Cummins that wasn’t beige or red, and I’ve never seen a Caterpillar that wasn’t yellow, and my engine does NOT sound like a Detroit.
I really would like to know what exactly I have.
If anyone out there can direct me as to the places to look for the information on my engine and transmission I really would appreciate it.

Nice carpenter . Chances are it’s an IH engine since it’s a 3800 chassis. A dt360 or DT466 or possibly a 7.3 IDI. Pictures mean more than description of color

Pics of the engine are more helpful than pics of the bus in this case.

I actually looked up the VIN and it said it had an International 7.3, but for me that was just a shot in the dark.
Is there a way to be sure?

Is it a V8? (Has 2 valve covers and a nearly flat floor inside?) or does it have a single long engine with a decent size doghouse inside?

I have seen a DT360 that the paint was faded enough to look greenish.

Like said, pics are worth 1000 words.
Navistar engines were a greenish blue color until they went to the ngd blue.
If it's a 1990, v8, and the vin says 7.3, it's likely the 7.3 idi. Similar engine as to what is in my bus.
The t444e was always an E, and was always a heui engine. The IDI never came turbo'd from navistar. Any power increases to the idi require the installation of a turbo. Hypermax sells a kit that works for the trucks/buses, or you can piece together and build your own from one of the kits made for the ford trucks.
Is your transmission a manual or automatic? If it's an auto, it's likely an at545. You can verify by looking at the data plate on the passenger side of the transmission.

I don't believe International used anything but their own engines, the only other options being the DT530 / DT466 / DT408 / DT360, which I believe were all inline-six-cylinders, these were the only diesel V-8 International used in these.

I believe that it’s an inline six.
I know for a fact that it has a turbo installed.
Thank you very much for trying to help.

The international trucks could be ordered with a host of different power plants from all the manufacturers.
However, I've only ever seen IH buses equipped with international engines. I'm not sure if the other options weren't available or if the bus builder decided not to pass those on to the buyer.
