I see that is correct. I searched and it said they don't have to be red but usually are. My experience has been the opposite, rarely do I see red turn signals.

Here is a different line of thought on this. Since this was a "commercial" vehicle at one time and came under the FMCSA rule book during that time, why not still adhere to the rules.
That would avoid any question about complying to the lighting standards.

According to the doc that was posted recently, the three little lights (red in the back, amber in the front) are "identification lamps".

I don't beleive anything on those 2 lights is required other than the clear tag light in the bottom it.

The clearance lights (3 in the middle and one on each side) are required due to the width of the vehicle. The side ones may be on the edge and be for the side as-well-as the rear; something to keep in mind if you move them. I consider reflects a good idea regardless, as a passive way to be visible at night (sometimes the light lens is also a reflector). Imagine if your battery is dead, no lights work, and your on the side of the road. Of course you will have the safety triangles etc. so it isn't too bad

Also in my research I thought I saw something about maximum height of turn/stop lights. So that is why I am not sure what to do with the top lights that formerly flashed. I will probably do rear flood lights for backing-up.
