Which rear lights do you have to keep working

Okay, this might be a dumb question, but I'm thinking I might not be the only person who's wondering + I have an idea for the back of my bus that will require I understand this.

So I made a handy little image with the identical lights on each side of a bus's rear having the same number so those who know can inform me easily

My Q :: Which of these lights/reflectors must I keep in working order? All? I assume not the very top ones (#s 1 and 2).

6 is a reflector, right?

..and the 3 at the very top centre as well as the 2 on the sides at the back corners.
You'll be needing the clear backup lights as well.

So we need to keep:

the three little ones at the very top (that I did not mark)
the two small ones one the top sides (just around the corner ;) )
and
3, 4, and 5

Correct?

(btw, I do not have my bus yet... need to pick it up, so I have nothing to look at - LOL)

1 & 2 need to be removed or disabled as flashers or repurposed as brake and turn signals. Everything else is required IINM. With the exception of the 2 red lights (5)above the rear reflectors. I doubt they are required for anything other than the white light in the bottom of the left one to light the license plate. On mine the upper ambers are turn signals, and the reds will be bright white back up lights.

Same applies to the upper lights on the front.

Check with your DMV to be sure but the top, (#1+2), as well as the corresponding upper flashing lights out front have to be removed completely in my state.

#1 and #2 may be safely removed. I repurposed mine with new LED lights to duplicate the Stop, Tail, Turn functions from the ones below. Turn signals may be yellow (amber) or red in the U.S., but if using amber, there cannot be a steady light facing rearward. Since my bus, for some reason, had red turn signals on the back, I chose to make all 8 replacement lights on the back red and all of them function as tail lights. I want maximum possible visibility for following drivers. The upper clearance and marker lights will likely switch to LED's at some point, as will the lower, smaller brake and license plate ones.


All the other lighting is federally mandated (for vehicle size and weight, regardless of use and function), do you think bus builders would add any more lights (IE, spend any more money) than they absolutely had to? Even factory built RV's have the same lighting setup (mostly, they are only required to have 1 pair of Stop, Tail, Turn signals in the back).

I think 4 and 5 are redundant except for maybe the tag light.
You don't have to have 4 tail lights.

If all 8 are red, what do you use for turn signals?
