Who has turned their bus double doors into a single door?

Hey guys...

Looking for ideas on what to do with our bus door. I want to keep the look but the roller system is damaged and the door is slightly tweaked so we need to rebuild it anyways. My thoughts are to converter it to a single door but reuse the 2 panels.

Looking for how you guys hinged the door to go outward (as the inner most panel on mine folds inward).. and what changes you needed to make.

I'm no stranger to metal fab and such so thats no problem.

Pics would be very helpful.

Thanks

I’ve thought about it so I can get rid of the manual handle. I thought about bolting it to some horizontal square tube stock, Top middle and bottom. Attach to bus with continuous hinge.

lorna schinske's bluebird, was one of the early pioneers.
Her thread was recently revived here: https://www.skoolie.net/forums/f10/o...door-6272.html

Many have followed her lead, while others have done it more complex with some amazing fab work.

Here’s what I did on my double to single door conversion. I first took off the door that I did not won’t hinged. Then on the hinge side, I went between every rivet and pre drilled a small hole ( smaller than a #12 self tapping screw). I then proceeded to remove all the rivets holding the hinge on the jam. I removed the hinged door and used 3” x 1 1/2” tubing to weld between the two halves. I then took 16 gauge galvanized sheet metal 4” wide and covered my welds on both sides of the door. (Trim hides a multitude of sins) I then had to fabricate a jam on the non hinged side that I could install weatherproofing to keep wind & rain out. I then pre drilled more holes than I can count and install stainless steel sheet metal screws to hold the 16 gauge sheet metal on the middle of the two halves and upper & lower part of the door. I topped it off with an aluminum valve wheel that i had in my scrap pile. There is no mechanical lock on the exterior of the door. It is controlled with a mag lock and a electronic keypad.

Like you, I wanted to keep the school bus look so I welded the original pair of doors together and hung them on a modified shuttle bus door actuator.
