You all have talked us into it, we're going to do a roof extension

We're planning on adding some windows and skylights to our lofted area, and I got to wondering whether or not
they need to be made of automotive grade glass, or if we could do normal insulated (housing grade) glass.
Would regular glass pose a safety concern if we were to get into an accident?

Regular household glass would shatter in an accident and it would probably be a safety hazard, for the passengers and the rescue people.

Even though, safety glass is not as insulated as the household glass, it would probably be a lot safer. Check out some of the RV windows on ebay, you might find what you want. Also, you might try your local Craig's list and find some there.

If you are planning on removing some of your windows, you might try reusing them.

check out this e-bay store, she has always Windows and lots of other goodies for your conversion. I got 8 windows, Toilet, Shower basin, taps, etc. from that place. Shipping is quick good communication. If there is a problem with the shipment you can reach a real person by phone and they are helpful. One good e-bay experience for me.

I spent some pleasant time as a docent in an Automobile Museum. There I learned why the early cars -- 1900s to 1920s -- were almost all open bodied cars. It wasn't that the weather was nicer then. And it wasn't that people were hardier then. It was the grotesque hazard of plate glass.

"Safety glass" was invented in the late 1920s, and pretty much revolutionized the automobile industry. (1928 Model A Ford.)

There are two kinds.

Tempered glass, which shatters relatively harmlessly into fourtyeleven gazillion "pebbles". It is used in side- and rear- windows. It can not be cut, and is not sold over the counter for automotive use.

Laminated glass. It is used in windshields, because it does NOT shatter in fourtyeleven gazillion pieces, but stays somewhat together so you can see to bring the car to a safe stop. Flat laminated glass is sold over the counter and can be cut to any size.

Laminated glass is what you want to put in your bus. See your local automobile glass shop for custom cuts. Or, of course, use automotive, bus and RV windows.

No residential plate glass, PLEASE!
