@SeanF

Where did you source your hardware for your deck?

I need to build a roof deck in a couple of weeks and this is my favorite design so far.

Doesn't all the deck hardware have to be done before any inside wall/ceiling finishing?

For the hardware that was used in that deck build go to the Simplified Building website, http://www.simplifiedbuilding.com .

Doing it again, I would build it smaller and/or with lighter materials. The Trex decking still looks great but is quite heavy per linear foot. I do like having the shade that it provides, so I would lean toward a full-coverage deck, but I would shoot for lighter material...aluminum decking or something along those lines. Maybe expanded sheet metal with a central catwalk for accessing stuff?
Great information an ideas. Can you send me some pictures? I will be building ours in June

They are called Kee Klamps, made in the UK. Kinda pricey. Found at McMaster-Carr. At their site search on "structural framing fittings".
These are the McMaster-Carr part numbers for the fittings I used.
4936T91 Iron Slip-On Structural Framing System Rect Flange W/Closed End
4936T71 Iron Slip-On Structural Framing System Oval Flange
4936T64 Iron Slip-On Structural Framing System Adj 180 Deg Rect Flange
It looks a lot like marine hardware. Anyone interested in copying might want to check out a West Marine or some other boat store. And then buy online instead because if you have a boat or plane, you've gotta be rich. Well, at least the stores think so.

NS for wetter climates!

The cedar cross supports have a nice weathered look and are structurally fin:

For anyone doing wanting to do something similar in a wetter climate I would recommend NOT sinking the nuts like that - a perfect place for water to pool and soak the wood = rot. Not so bad with cedar but you're still reducing the life. It would be a shame to watch your deck slide off your roof one day under heavy braking - would ruin forward visibility.. Much better to use a dome-headed coach/carriage bolt with the thread down if possible

Thanks for the excellent photos. I hope to do a deck on top my bus. Where did you find the fittings and do you remember what the are called?

These are SUPER-expensive especially when you had them shipped from the UK with the exchange rate and everything.. I wonder if you couldn't have something equally neat fabbed up locally..

Edit: Oh wait.. I missed the McMaster Carr bit.. Still expensive but I guess prob cheaper than custom

And yet ANOTHER option......found these at Lowes for way less (search for SteelTek). The galvanized finish isn't as nice, but that's not a big concern to me. The fixed feet will go down the centerline of the roof, and the pivoting feet will be out to the sides. The pivots should allow placement anywhere I want along the curve of the roof.

Will probably shim the pivot rivets with split rubber washers to reduce rattling, and will 69 the open set screws in favor of some 3/4" bolts heavily Loctited, with holes bored into my pipe lengths to accomodate the bolts and keep the pipe from moving, which will prevent the pivots from allowing side-to-side movement.

Planning a 80" x 14' pipe framing, with 3/4" planks on top of those.

And thank y'all VERY much for posting those links.....got me thinking in a totally different direction than I had originally. I love the free sharing of ideas on this site.

That should dull up pretty quick with exposure to the elements..

and 'Cheers!'.. I'll have to see if they do that in Lowes.ca

Edit: Nope.. stupid Lowes

Edit again: Canadian skoolie's - Acklands Grainger and the following dudes stock Kee-Klamp:

Not cheap even with the Cdn distributors, Acks, Global, simplified etc. I'm going to the two "hardware" stores here in town to see what we have. Sadly our Acks closed about 3 months ago, with the big hydro project here winding down thee boards are already going up on a bunch of businesses. Which is beneficial to me if they have stock.....lots of them never stocked much though so...
At the very least I would like to do my roof mounts before I leave here, then I don't have to mess with the finished interior later.

Yeah, not cheap, but it is interesting to look at all the different connectors. I bought stuff to make an exterior residential stair handrail. That was not too bad price wise at all.

After all the rain we had in early spring, now with the sunny blue skies, Whidbey Island is truly beautiful if you don't mind mowing the grass twice a week. Otherwise it's let 'er grow!
