Yellow Buses

Hello Skoolies:

Im new to the forum and I looking for the real truth! I just bought a bus a few month ago, removed the wording, disconnected the flashers, and removed the stop sign from the bus. I have read on some post here or somewhere that it is illegal to drive a yellow painted school bus for private use in Texas. I understand the logic but where can I find that law?

I don't know for sure though. My bus still has the wording, flashers, AND the stop sign that swings out... Only the name of the district was blacked out by the school when the sold it, still says "****** SCHOOL DISTRICT". I'm curious as well. I asked my Sheriff buddy, he had no idea either.. (but I'm in Utah)

every state is different.. look up the requirements for a church bus in your state and you'll likely get your answers

Every state is different, however you can't go wrong with even spray-bombing it a color that isn't National School Bus Chrome Yellow (faded)

At the present time, I don't want to invest in a paint job if I don't have to. I can live with the original color. I just don't want to be in violation. I rather start with the conversion and that a little by little. I'll keep looking until I find the correct answer.

I was able to find the laws for my state (CO) doing an on line search. There is a section that talked about requirements for school busses. I also checked in the section talking about commercial vehicle requirements. If there was a law prohibiting something it would be there.
Most laws tell you what you are prohibited or required to do. You are looking for something that says "It doesn't matter what color you paint it." They are probably not going to have that. You just want to make sure the don't have a law prohibiting a non school bus from being that color.

I am in tx, I remembering reading that you can keep it yellow, remove the stop sign, cover "school bus", the front/real roof flashing lights need to be removed/painted/taped over, as I recall just disabling them was not enough,

I put clear lenses on mine and disabled the blinking function so they are spot lights now.

Fellow Texan here: I drive my unregistered uninsured blacked out ISD with all flashers around. You are invisible in a "stock" bus because it is assumed you are a school bus.

That said, lose the sign, spray black over school, swap the lenses on the flashers to NOT red and as I understand it you are good to go in TX. Only emergency/state/county/etc vehicles can have RED flashers, I think blue are forbidden as well.
