2002 Thomas Saf-T-Liner Off-Grid Skoolie For Sale

Looking for a unique off-grid adventure vehicle, self sufficient guest room, or tiny home?
Originally a school bus for the Richmond, Virginia school district, this vehicle has been beautifully transformed into a one-of-a-kind “skoolie”. At 27 feet, it’s easy to drive yet spacious enough to sleep 4, featuring a double bed and two twin beds that convert into a dinette.

The interior boasts premium finishes, including a cast iron Hobbit woodstove imported from the UK, 100-year-old reclaimed checked white heart pine flooring from Asheville, NC (sealed with Zero VOC sealant and brass fasteners), and a front wall made of 100-year-old reclaimed cedar from Charleston, SC. For added comfort, the bus is insulated with 2.5 inches of natural sheep wool from Oregon, USA.

Complete with a kitchen, toilet/shower room, and a powerful solar system, this skoolie is perfect for off-grid living or your next adventure on the road.

Powered by a CAT 3126 diesel engine and an Allison AD2000 automatic transmission, this skoolie offers reliable and smooth performance. The engine was last serviced by a mechanic who described it as incredibly reliable and “bullet-proof” when properly maintained. Mileage is 183K.

The fuel tank holds 40-50 gallons.

The living space features two bench seats that convert into twin beds for nighttime use. A marine-style table can be set up with removable leg poles that fit into mounted stands. For storage, there are eight underseat pods and a small shelving unit, perfect for games and essentials.

The front cabin features two bench seats that convert into twin beds for nighttime use.

The floor is 100-year-old reclaimed checked white heart pine from Asheville, NC, sealed with an eco-friendly Zero VOC sealant. The front wall is 100-year-old reclaimed cedar sourced from Charleston, SC. The door is a custom barn-style door made from reclaimed wood, fitted with an antique handle.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, an electronic hot plate, a KitchenAid toaster oven, and a coffee maker with grinder, providing everything you need for cooking on the go.
It features a sink with hot and cold running water thanks to the water heater and pump. The kitchen is completed with a stunning stained wooden countertop and an expandable metal counter unit for added prep and cooking space.

The Hobbit model cast iron woodstove, imported from the UK, has a glass front for a cozy ambiance.

The stove includes a unique “fresh air draw” system, pulling cold air from outside the bus for combustion, making it safer by preserving indoor oxygen levels. It also comes with a removable ash pan and a double-wall stove pipe for efficient heating and easy maintenance. An overhead AC unit, packs quite the punch and can even go toe to toe with a Texas Summer.

The shower and toilet room in this RV is designed for comfort and convenience. Hot water is available through a dual heating system, allowing water to be heated either by the engine or the onboard water heater. The water heater is versatile, powered by either the solar system for off-grid living or utility power when connected. The RV is equipped with both grey and black water tanks to manage wastewater efficiently, making it ideal for extended trips and eco-conscious travel.

The bedroom is thoughtfully designed for comfort and functionality. It features a custom Casper mattress for a restful night’s sleep, along with a convenient charging port for your devices.

A built-in shelf provides space for personal belongings, while a retractable blind ensures privacy and blocks out light for uninterrupted sleep. For storage, there are multiple drawers as well as a spacious shelf at the foot of the bed, perfect for stowing larger items.

The RV’s battery storage system offers a total capacity of 400Ah, with two 200Ah batteries operating at 12V. This provides an overall energy storage of 4.8kWh, with a usable capacity of approximately 3.84kWh. Additionally, the solar energy system includes 800W solar panels, capable of generating approximately 4kWh of energy daily, based on an average of 5 peak sunlight hours per day. This setup ensures reliable energy production and storage for off-grid living.

In addition to its solar energy system, the RV can also be plugged into shore power when available. This allows for seamless access to utility power, ensuring that the battery storage system can be recharged and all onboard appliances and systems can be powered without relying solely on solar or the onboard battery.

Solar power can be redirected to charge the engine batteries. Both systems can be monitored to check charging levels.

The RV is equipped with a 40-gallon fresh water tank, providing ample water for extended trips. It also features a large under-floor storage area, offering easy access to the plumbing and electrical systems for maintenance.

There is a wall shelf unit, accessible from the outside and side storage designed to accommodate cables, hoses, equipment, and even firewood, ensuring that all your essentials are conveniently stored and organized.
