Carrier ac units

Hi all, we bought a 2003 IC bus, and I don’t think I want to keep the factory Carrier AC units. I was told that they were not working by the previous owner of the bus, but they appear intact. Maybe you can work on them or use them for parts. There are two units, one in the rear and one behind the front entrance on the side.

I think they’re are model EM-1, 52000 btu each with separate two separate condensers outside the bus and two compressors on the engine. I’m not ready to drive the bus quite yet but want to finish stripping the inside panels, so need to deal with the refrigerant, which is r134a. Best case scenario is you’d come with your equipment and expertise to drain the refrigerant. I’m in south central Mississippi, close to Laurel.

Are these worth anything? I really don’t know, so make me an offer. Images are in the link because I can’t post them here yet.

I'm in Gulfport, MS. Where are the outside condensers located, under the bus or on the roof? Do you have pics of them?

Me personally, I wouldn't take the ac units out. There will come a time where it will hot as hell outside and it will be raining so you can't open the windows to get some air flowing in the bus as your driving down the road without getting your bus soak and wet.

I'd get them working, insulate the bus well and enjoy the cool ride!

The condensers are under the bus, one on either side.

I’ve thought about it, but this seems best for us. We plan to travel infrequently, and to have shore power when we’re stopped. I’m tall and we’re not doing a roof raise, we already have a portable ac unit and may add a rooftop rv unit as well. Hard decision though. I’d really rather not have to spend on something that won’t be used much at all.

I am interested although all I really need is the undermount condensers. What do you want for it if you decide to sell?

I would take Cadillackid’s advice. I incorporated my back unit into my cabinetry. The front unit I removed the evaporator coil, but I’m replacing it with a coil out of a fire truck.

Hey bridg! I have a rear a/c unit for sale if you're interested. You can check out my recent post if interested. There is a link to my Craigslist listing. I would probably be interested in selling individual parts if that's all you need. Thanks!

I just installed an EM-1 as a rear unit in my DEV bus.. thats the damn coldest A/C unit of the 3.. im currently on a roadtrip through the south... in the daytime its rrunning sunny with temps up near 100..the dewpoint is in the low 70s im sure glad to have that Road A/C keeping me somewhere between 68-74 inside.. even headed west in the afternoon where every window you touch is hot.. the black metal defroster duct in the sun is hot. but im nice N chill in the chair with the A/C cooling..

the only issue im having is that the EM-1 carrier is so cold that condensation is forming on the vents and dripping a bit.. but its a 30 year old bus with original windows and i know it doesnt seal real tight..

its a bit hard to see but this was me yesterday... it was about 97-98 outside in mississippi I was headed westbound into the sun..

a friend of mine was travelling I-80 up north a couple weeks ago and even up there this year he was encountering temps in the mid 90s.. (they have cooled off up north now)..

with this hot summer I have been thanked a by a couple fellow skoolies for hounbding them into keeping their factory A/C as they did test runs with it turned off and found out how hot a school bus is inside.. esp if you remove a bunch opf windows like many do to gain blank wall space..
