At 26 feet long, it’s big enough to live in comfortably wherever the road takes you, yet compact enough with a relatively short wheelbase to turn tightly and maneuver in some pretty tight places. Ernest the Skoolie is a 2000 Blue Bird TC1000 with a 5.9L 24v Cummins diesel and Allison 545 automatic transmission. The diesel mechanics will tell you that if treated right (like shifting down when going up a long hill), this workhorse combo will carry you for many years to come. We’ve spent over $15,000 on essential mechanical systems (new brakes, suspension, radiator, transmission; we’ll show you the work order), so it’s as reliable as any 22-year-old vehicle can be. It spent its working life in Phoenix, so there’s no rust. Current mileage is 157,605.
Wired with solar, with a comfy bed, composting toilet, apartment-size refrigerator/freezer, 75 gallons of fresh water, tiny wood stove, new LED headlamps, and lots of storage space – you can boondock anywhere. Cruise control lets you roll at 65-70, and a refreshed interior with a real removable table lets you live comfortably.
We’ve come to a point in our lives where we’re ready to downsize again, so we’re looking forward to connecting Ernest with his next companions.
Like every skoolie, this one has a little work left to do, but we know from recent experience that it’s fully livable, on or off the grid. We did a wonderful road trip last summer – looping from Washington State to Indiana via the northern tier and returning via Route 66 – and had no problems in 100-degree heat and multiple crossings of the Continental Divide. A turbo oil cooler helps the engine handle any temperature and any hill. Did we mention crossing the Continental Divide twice in one day without a problem?
The previous owner had the engine rebuilt – cylinders bored and sleeved. Tires have several years left on them. There’s a hitch on the rear bumper for a bike rack. It’s registered as an RV in Oregon and we have the clean title in hand. Tags good through August 2022.

- Replaced air filter assembly, new filter
- Replaced radiator
- Replaced worn u-joints on rear driveline. Topped off differential
- Replaced tie rod ends. Aligned front end
The bus is currently located in Hansville, WA (on the Olympic Peninsula). Once we close the deal we could deliver it in Washington or Oregon for the cost of fuel.
