Here is the bus in question, trying to decide if the rust is worth it. I dont mind patching the floors or sanding and managing the rust as long as it isnt structural.

Its a Cummins with the MD 3060, 30 foot like I want, Handicap door in the position id like, air ride suspension. Without the rust it would be my dream bus. With the rust, im trying to judge its hassle.

I'd say no. Try to figure changing a steering ball-joint, a brake caliper, ... or, just removing the nuts and bolts securing the seats through the floor. Mine is a 2013, almost no rust, and I didn't enjoy crawling under the bus to reach and remove these nuts. I can't imagine the hell it would have been if everything was "rust-welded".

What is the year make and model of the bus? What is the Cummins? 6.7?
5.9? 12 or 24 valve.
Why would you or anyone want to invest time and money into a platform that appears to be compromised by rust? Because it's cheap? That thinking can be costly. The AT545 is fine. Don't overspeed it. It's easy.
Even a manual transmission can be over does in a descent. It's a weight gravity thing. People with manuals insist in Jakes. Just get a bus. And start learning. You have the benefit of a lot of people here. All of us have made mistakes and the best of us have learned from them and you are the recipient of our lessons. Let's not make this too complicated. Live and learn but get going. Time is of the essence.

And remember. Skoolies aren't the only game in town. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

I appreciate both of you two!

It’s a 12v 5.9, and believe me it’s certainly not cheap! It was actually more expensive than most of the AT545s that were rust free that I was looking at. I was looking into it because I liked the mechanicals. This is a new world for me and there is a lot to learn. I’ve been close on a couple of busses thus far, but there always seems to be one variable wrong.

Moki, I would love to discuss the Bluebird with you, if nothing more than to just learn more about the 545 and gearing! I love nothing more than to learn new things and everyday I feel like I’m learning something new here, and I can’t tell you all how much I appreciate the knowledge that all of you share.

Also, that fire truck is BAD ASS!

Where are images found for the Blue Bird? How many miles on it? The Carpenter you state has 450,000 miles and runs "strong".
I'd rather hear more about the Blue Bird. Does it also run strong? And what are the rear axle ratios for the respective buses?
Thanks in advance.

Still looking for images of the Blue Bird...and what the actual length of it is.
If it's 24 feet I'll buy it without pictures

Me too and I checked every dealer/truck paper etc.
It seems there really is a shortage of shorties (man, that was bad).
Anyhow, good luck to us (im in WA state btw).

Just watched 6 shorties sell in WA state on GovDeals last week. I wanted to jump on 1 of them but WA is just a little further than I want to travel right now.

I actually have seen them, the ones Ford ones from the Puyallup school district.
Almost bid on one too.

Looking for a bus with “character”, like the High Top 19 passenger International.
But thanks for reminding me to check the surplus sites again.

Oh, and I did find some dealer in Florida that does “layaway”; $100 puts in on hold for 7 days etc. but with only a few thousand down it would take forever to get it plus I can’t afford to have it delivered from that far.

This bus hunt is getting pretty stressful to be honest since I’m selling my car instead of fixing it and I need a bus ASAP for small errands like driving my kid to school twice a week.

Sorry for the long post but I think reality finally set in and it will take more cash and time to find what I’m looking for.
Thanks again.
