Quite funny you should mention the Land Rover Defender as that came up at dinner with some work colleagues last night. One of my colleagues went to East Coast Defender in Kissimmee, FL a few weeks ago but couldnt stomach the price they were asking. $90,000 for a 1995 all original Defender. Crazy money! They also sell rebuilt ones starting at $110,000 with LS3 motors I believe and converted to LHD.

Four BB AA in Southern California. All are listed with "Detroit 8.1 Diesel", whatever that is.
This is one of them.

I just checked the VIN and it shows it as an intercooled 8.2L.
The most common place you might've seen the 8.1 listed (correctly) is the CNG engine that was made by John Deere.
GM also made a 496 cube big block (8.1L) that was used by Blue Bird with a propane conversion on it. I feel like those are pretty few and far between though.

Hialeah, FL
The mecca for fraud.
I wouldn't take a car from there even if it was free.

I'd have to agree. But I'm admittedly not a fan of south FL.

Several people were recently looking for a completed build. This one has stacked washer/dryer and just about everything else you could ask for.

It's part of Obama's Diesel Emissions Reduction Act(DERA) and the EPA's charge to remove "dirty" diesels and replace them with "clean" diesels. Sort of like tier 4 diesels for on-road equipment.
Districts can get grants and/or rebates for new "clean" diesel buses if they apply these draconian "demilling" steps to what are essentially perfectly fine, useful buses. To enure the engines are not reused, they cut a 3" hole in the block, and to ensure that someone does not buy a bus and simply install a different "dirty" diesel engine in it's place, they cut the frame ensuring that the bus will indeed be scrapped and not re-purposed.
The dirty rats!!! ;/

Cash for clunkers for busses basically... those of us into classic cars watched as some real nice classics went to that program... even cars that wouldve brough more money through standard trade-in were destroyed in that program..
its not known whether that bus had issues or not , sometimes vehicles in that program were ones that went into a major repair state.. ie note the turbo missing on that bus.. people werent supposed to part any piece of them out as to not promote fixing other "dirty diesels" with parts from the one you enter into the program.. it could be they sniped the turbo, or it could be they found said bus experienced an engine failure... so they entered it into the program to get a grant to help them buy a new bus... esp when its a one-off and not a bunch.. most times when ive seen widespread disabling of busses to emission prigrams it will be many at once and will be in a certain target area where the ywant to reduce emissions (or at least look good to the tree-huggers)..
