The 444E is a great engine by itself. Put it in a 30 some foot long bus and it has trouble getting out of its own way. Find one with a DT466 or a Cummins 8.3
Does anyone know if or when Montgomery County will be selling their buses this year? Are they gonna be MB diesels or still CATs?

Thanks for the info. I have a T444E in a 26' box truck and even loaded for bear it moves the truck alright (after restoring the whole cooling systems). But I had no idea how much heavier buses can be. Vlads weight on his trip East was an eye opener

You would get better exposure by making an ad for each bus if you have more than one.

No, I meant to say it would be not enough power in a full size bus regardless of it being a front engine or rear engine. I guess I should have said that from the get go. Sorry for any confusion...

Rear engine buses tend to be larger in size, so it would be underpowered for that size whether FE or RE.

Could these smaller engines be "massaged" to put out a lil' more power or torque?

With enough time and $$$ just about anything can be done. But for what it would cost why not purchase a bus with the right engine and transmission at the start?
The T444E is much like the Cummins ISB. Many times they came rated as 250 HP the same as a DT466 or Cummins ISC. But the DT466 and ISC would walk away from the T444E and ISB like they were stopped while going up a hill.
Massaging a T444E is going to also cause issues with overheating and if it is hooked to an Allison AT540 your run the real risk of blowing the transmission up.

What Cowlitz says. I have a 2001 Ford F350 7.3 Powerstroke which is basically just the T444E in a pickup. I can do bigger injectors, turbo and a Hydra tuner, all kinds of things. As long as you have a transmission that can take the pounding! My truck is fast but mainly because it's like half the weight of a skoolie.
You can't really do those sorts of mods in a bus, though. For one thing rear engine buses can't take a lot of power upgrades without some serious work in the cooling department and its difficult to get enough air flow back there anyway. Plus the ECM stuff is totally different so none of the tuners or chips that the Ford crowd plays with would ever work on a skoolie.

So there was a Bluebird prison bus on Public Surplus out of Washington state a year ago. I was bidding on it then ultimately lost interest and somebody got it for a little over $2K.
I was browsing CL the other day and ran across the same bus. What really blew my mind was the guy asking $11K for it

That guy somehow made the interior of a prison bus even less appealing.
