Mobile Mechanic's Special. Depending on what's wrong with the engine, could be an simple in-frame engine rebuild or junkyard engine swap. AK bus with rust unknown, and could be a low-spec drivetrain.
Interior is uninsulated skoolie with spartan digs, giant woodstove for AK winters.

That isn't a very good price, imo. I'd hesitate to pay that if it were running.

I would be very hesitant in pulling a transmission just to change the torque convertor. The only transmissions I have ever had a problem with the torque convertor there were other problems that ended up requiring the transmission to be replaced.

Those buses are a dime a dozen, I wouldn't bother buying one with known mechanical issues.

With a 6.0L diesel even if it were given to you for free it would cost too much!

The long version and the short version are basically the same. But it's really a common topic and as much as I hate to say "use the search" that's gonna save a lot of people a lot of typing the 6.0 was also known as the navistar vt365 which should help with finding relevant info.

There are a couple of businesses that I have worked with here that bought a bunch of 6.0 Ford's. At stock power levels they have been reliable after replacing the oil cooler and EGR cooler and adding a coolant filter.
Definitely not Navistar or Ford's best moments....

I went and looked at this bus and the Blue Bird All Americans. They're rust free and have tires in excellent condition. The city of Harrsionburg seems to take great care of their buses, even the block heaters are still plugged in on these buses. That said all the AAs have body damage, the best one also being the one with the least miles. Notably the highest bidder for all three is the same and apparently not afraid to rise the price up.
The International has an AT545, the mechanic said "1500 series" and AT545 as if they are interchangeable. Again excellent tires, fired right up, and a nice clean, straight body.
I also saw several very attractive looking activity buses that I cannot wait to see hit the auction block.

Quickly... I happen to have this chart, and it does show an AT 1500.
Wild guess that it might be a 500-series with Park pawl for vehicles with hydraulic brakes.

I'm almost certain I did not see a park gear, I didn't look too hard at it after the mechanic confirmed it was an AT545. Definitely air braked.

Sorry I cannot help you more.
But I can tell you this... that when I bought Millicent, a school-district mechanic told me she had the AT545. And he was wrong. Millicent has the MT643. (Sure was a pleasant surprise!)
The reason he assumed it was the 545, is that the bus had been used at a different location, then transferred to the main location for sale, so he was not familiar with this particular bus.
And Millicent is 40 feet long -- 84 students -- while most of their buses were 37 1/2 -- 78 students.
I mention this because these things do happen -- humans being humans and all that.
There is a sticky post somewhere here with photos of both the 545 and the 643.

There is nothing more expensive than a free bus. It's free because it isn't worth anything.

Ford commissioned International (Navistar) to build the 6.0 to be cheaper than the excellent 7.3 ( a "real" IH engine) they were using. And boy-howdy, did the bean counters succeed. For one thing, they skimped on the bolt/studs that hold the heads onto the block, so they blow head-gaskets rather often.
("Routine service; oil, filters, and head gaskets.")
No, I do not have any personal experience with it, but I know a lot of old coots with RVs, and the 6.0 horror stories fly thick at the Lions Club meetings.
