That 454 bus is sweet, I would be tempted to do an 8100 swap though. Or maybe a 4 bolt main block with a stroker kit, some port and polish work on the heads, headers maybe a cam somewhere in the .230’s -.250’s in duration and somewhere around half an inch of lift.... compression ratio just under 10:1. A nice intake with runners that arent too big for good intake air velocity. or maybe dare I say a blower from a 6v71? 8lbs of boost never hurt anyone. Could really power up the hills with that baby.

Now were talking. That 8.1 is a sweet motor. I have the 6.0 in my 3/4 ton pickup and its been great. The 8.1 would've been better, but they're really hard to find. A blower on an 8.1 would be a great setup for a skoolie in all honesty. Lots of low end grunt without any lag from a turbo.

What happens if you run an AT545 down a hill too fast? The bus won't be able to slow down with the air brakes due to no engine braking? Or you'll destroy the transmission due to overheating? Or the air brakes will overheat and destroy those? And is this an issue on any interstate downgrade, like those in California or are those gradual enough?

NO engine braking... it just freewheels. Gotta stab the brakes to modulate speed.

Yay! Good for you...I know you've searched with passion and we're glad you found the right one. Now, we look forward to seeing what you do with her! And, remember, bring her down to Flagstaff and show her off sometime.

Also, found from the manufacturer that the bus was built with an Allison AT-545. Again, it's a 30' bus and not fullsize- is this a big issue? There is a possibility the transmission was changed or improved later on.

I took a look at this bus yesterday, seller added a larger album with some build photos. I drove it around the California foothills, and it was the first time I drove a bus. I got on a major highway with an incline onramp with continued incline up a hill- it was tough going faster than 35-40 MPH with the pedal to the ground. It seemed like I was either on full throttle (on level or inclines) or no throttle (on downhills)- is this typical of buses?
Otherwise everything works. I'm going to have to test drive other buses to compare.

1978 Gillig conversion FS California
Not mine of course. Ad says 1996 Gillig, but bus data plate says 1978, I think seller is reading the data plate wrong. It's a 1978 and its the Phantom city bus style and looks like it's already converted. Smooth streets only!

Not for the faint of heart or build ability. Bus has been sitting a decade and needs everything.........but it just might already be titled as an RV.

That sure is one strange bus. On the outside it looks like a '96, inside it looks like a '78 ???
