A few low mileage later model Chevy/GMC vans out in Cali auctioned for around 2-3 grand last year. THey had the 8.1's and low miles.

Apparently some were factory running on propane. Would make the half-million mile babies before the first rebuild.
350 hp and/or nearly 500 lb-ft of torque at 3400rpm, depends on the truck, the dumps and tankers geared way low.
But terrible mpg of course

I don't think the "vans" would have the rear end suspension for 1500+ pounds ball weight.
But the 4500-7500 trucks were made for the heavy loads from the get go, just so pricey.
That's why I'm thinking the busses, maybe chop the rear body off, put in a utility flatbed with a gooseneck.

I’ve not seen the 8.1 full chassis busses.. I’ve seen the 8.1 gasser in the kodiak and topkick trucks. The busses show it was available just pretty rare.

I'm also seeing some shuttle style busses, handicapped transport etc, but very pricey.
New Jersey has skoolies but bad shape 200+K miles. But cheap enough could maybe drop $3K for a crate engine or rebuild.
Very hard to get GAWR info remotely.

6.0 would be my choice over the 8.1.
They're powerful, economical, and last forever.

Even pulling a 14,000# trailer over the rockies?
Ideally I'd also be able to also load the tow vehicle down, but realize that may be unrealistic without going to diesel.
