SOLD: 1995 Bookmobile partial conversion

Bus is sold

The ultimate platform for your conversion! 1995 International 3800 chassis with custom Farber Specialty Vehicles body. Engine is an International (Navistar) DT466 mechanical injection diesel mated to an Alison MT643 4-speed automatic transmission. 150,580 original miles. Started life as a bookmobile. I averaged 10.3 mpg driving it from Tennessee to Florida. The entire shell aft of the windshield is 0.125”-thick aluminum with an inch of marine-grade plywood flooring. NO RUST in the body or chassis. The old generator box is quite rusty, though still intact. Starting battery box is aluminum. The floor is factory-insulated from underneath.

Clear Florida motorhome title in-hand. Located in Belleview, FL (50 minutes NW from Orlando, just off I-75). Asking $15,500 or best offer. I am posting this ad exclusively to skoolie.net for now. I'm hoping another enthusiast will take it and turn it into something amazing.

I bought this bus in 2011 and got a lot of work done to it, including stripping out the interior to the outer shell and rebuilding it with superior insulation and amenities. The square ceiling has over seven feet(!) of headroom and even retains standing headroom over the two 100-gallon fresh water tanks that I installed inside. I installed a hatch in the ceiling to access the roof deck (decking needs work) and it even has a 120VAC electric outlet on the roof and one on each side near the ground for your outdoor lighting or entertainment needs.

An accident prevented me from working on it for years and my life plans have since changed. I have reluctantly decided to let it go to someone who can make the best use of it. I’m not going to paint it or do anything else to it; the lucky buyer may want to continue what I’ve started, or rebuild/paint it to suit their needs. What I’ve installed is very robust, but it will be a damn sight easier to remove than the “glued and screwed” bookmobile parts.

Vehicle specifications and dimensions:

  • GAWR Rear 15,500 lbs

  • Front tires replaced in December 2011 and have less than 10 miles on them, rear tires are pretty good

  • Ariston GL4S 4-gallon point-of-use water heater, never used
  • 24-foot, 50-amp shore power cable with twist-lock, marine-grade female end and standard RV-park male end, includes 30-amp and 120-volt adapters
  • 15-psi pancake air compressor, almost new condition
  • Full size memory foam mattress, never used
  • Kenmore Elite combination microwave/convection oven, works, some heat damage to control panel
  • 3.5 cu ft chest freezer that isn’t working, but maybe you can get it up and running
  • Original interior heater core, removed when I was going to heat the vehicle with electric heaters
  • Various other pieces and parts that were either removed from the vehicle or acquired over the years, all yours now

I will include more photos in replies to this post.

WOW, there you go people, that is a real gem, wish I had found something like that for my conversion. Best motor you could have in a conversion, good transmission also. Someone should snap that up real quick.

I just added the spare tire to the garage area. It’s over ten years old, but has zero miles and has been stored inside most of its life. Also, this one and the two installed front tires have Dynabead balance beads inside.

Damn, that price is LOW!

If anyone at skoolie.net wants a second opinion or someone to go look at this rig, I will gladly go. Take pictures, crawl all up under it, smell inside, audio record the start-up...all that. I really want to see the Camel, too.

Maybe ECCB will ride along?

I've always been partial to bookmobiles and similar body style. Headroom, typically roof air, wired for basic 120v and usually a large diesel generator. Oh...and no bus windows. I was out bid on 4 of them, finally won an auction on one and the seller backed out. The one I ended up with was a private sale. I think they're the best platform for a motor home build. Most had very low mileage >50k and they all went for $20k or better. You won't have much trouble finding a home for yours.

*I have a spare, low hours (630) 16kW Martin diesel generator if the buyer wants to fill that generator bay back up

That sounds like the exact generator model that came out of this vehicle!

I would remind interested parties that the site warns to not give out personal details to prospective buyers, especially when they have almost no history of other interaction with the forums. If you have never posted on skoolie.net before today, I’m not going to give you my phone number until we’ve discussed the sale in depth.

I went up on the roof today and snapped a few photos for the sale. The decking is … okay. It should be replaced, but it’s sound and strong enough to walk on. I drove in a few 3” screws at the front to keep the warping down for now.

Phil I think it should sell YESTERDAY at that price.
Personally- I'd drive it up to the next "swarm" or tiny house show and stick a 25k price on it. Its totally a sellers market and the mechanical DT/643 alone would make a normal school bus cost about what you're asking.
Just my thoughts on it. She's a beauty!

I'd love to but will probably be busy this weekend. I would love to see it though.

Based on feedback I’ve received here and in several private messages, I’m going to raise the asking price and see what happens. Since we’re no longer able to edit posts after any subsequent replies, I’m unwilling to list a price here that may or may not change. Contact me for details.

That's more in line. Heck of a jump, but I think it reflects the current market and the value you have here. Your "partial" conversion is better then a lot of full conversions, mine included in that.
