Re: Wanted E350 chassis with tag axle

A friend of mine had a transportation company years ago. He had some of those buses. That tag caused him problems. I don't exactly remember what. I do know that Ford stopped the builders from making them. If you're not going to be driving it a ton, I can't see a problem with having one except for chewed up tires.

I have seen them on craigslist occasionally. They're out there. If I see one, I will post it here.

Re: Wanted E350 chassis with tag axle

Is there a reason you want the extra axle? 6 wheel short buses usually have a pretty hi GVWR to begin with. Mine was 16 passenger (not the shortest-but far from the largest) E-450-and it has a 14k gross. With a full interior -extra 50 gal. fuel tank-and a complete race shop in the last 5 feet, I'm just a tick over 12k.

Re: Wanted E350 chassis with tag axle

Hi,

I am building a show vehicle for a company. I do not "need" tag axle but it looks good. The bus body will be removed and sleeper cab installed and yes also a fifth wheel + trailer. Stack pipes also....

Re: Wanted E350 chassis with tag axle

if you are just building a vehicle, then any old 1 ton rear axle, placed wherever you want it behind the driving axle will work. Doing that aint rocket science. Adding the small 5th wheel plate isnt either.

Re: Wanted E350 chassis with tag axle

Well here in Finland I can not just add axle behind another. Or I can but I wont get approval for it from finnish motorvehicle safety agency(And this also means that they wont give me plates for it). Here axles can be added or removed only by vehicle manufacturer in this case bus manufacturer. Rules are much more complicated here than in US. Trust me I have tried this and answer was simple "modifications to vehicle axle configuration can only be done by vehicle manufacturer". So only way to get this done is to import a vehicle from US that has tag axle already installed by manufacturer. Also I can not install fifth wheel by myself "This coupling must be installed by a certified Truck/Trailer shop". Sound amazing does't it?

I'd call up ol' Sauli Niinistö and tell him you don't feel like getting loblollied by the finnish motorvehicle safety agency and tell him to get you an exemption. He's a pretty good dude and he'll get her done.

Re: Wanted E350 chassis with tag axle

Basically we used to have more flexible agency before this wonderful EU. Back then these exemptions were considered and sometimes even approved if plans and ideas were good. Now when in EU exemptions are rarely made. Now it is so easy for this agency to say "We might approve it but EU wont so unfortunately we can not help you" Basically they hide behind EU... And in a way I do understand them it is much easier to deny all these "wild" suggestions than to really consider all of them.

Well then, I'd move. I'd also spend the rest of my waking days trying to get Finland out of the EU. Hey, good luck from Texas.

And I really do not believe that Sauli would "get his hands dirty" like that anymore

Sounds like an interesting project.
It seems that all the various forums I go to ( from assorted bikes to VW diesels) the coolest + most powerful vehicle in that forum is from Finland.

That's cause they will put 2000hp,paddle tires on some tube and aim it at a verticle cliff and people say rednecks are crazy

This is what we can look forward to in November if you know who gets elected. He will try to put the US in the EU.

can that tag axle be lifted when not needed or driving in snow when lots of traction on the rear wheels is needed?
