he should have paid the extra $$$ in the conversion to have brakes put in.

I realize in a panic situation most people don't think, but....
Drop it into neutral, give it a second for the revs to fall to idle, slam it down into 1st gear, wait for it to engage, (may take a few seconds with it rolling backwards), then hit the gas.
