Cdl

Do I need my cdl to be legally able to drive a bus that isn't transporting children and is my house?

Technically, yes you do, as long as it has seating for 16 passengers it can still be considered a commercial vehicle. Pull the seats and you're good.

So do I have to register it as a mobile home?

Once it meets the requirements of an RV, yes, register it as a MH or RV and you are exempt from CDL requirements in most states.

Things vary by state. Your profile is blank so I don't know where you are.

Here in Washington you are required to have a CDL if the bus will seat 16 or more or has GVRW of greater than 26,000 lbs. There is an exemption for RV's that are over 26,000 lbs.

Most of us bend the rules a bit and drive them home without a CDL.

CDL is for commercial use.

The whole point of special motorhome registration is so that recreational drivers are exempted from requiring CDL.

Also, from our POV, lowers insurance and taxes.

If your state makes it "too hard", get it registered in VT by mail.
