This is standard in most states that have been discussed here. Texas also has the same exemption for CDL endorsements for recreational vehicles.

I was under the impression that there we no exemptions over 26k lbs.

Texas requires you to get a non-commercial license applicable to the vehicle weight if over 26k lbs, but does not require a CDL if it's a RV.

My standard license in Ga.includes "ALL RECREATIONAL VEHICLES", regardless of weight or brake system.

I have to admit fellas, I find all of these CDL threads rather humorous.

I can't figure out what is so difficult with understanding that it 'varies by state'. One person mentions something about one state and suddenly we are five states away - which only causes confusion.

Maybe there is another way to say "it varies by state". Maybe, "all states do not have the same rules."

Edit: I also find it humorous when people tell me I need a CDL for my bus without even knowing the state in which I am licensed/registered.

I think it’s just one of those things that isn’t very straightforward, and then people are trying to be helpful.

Heck, I was misinformed by the people that work at my county treasurer...

Just a question I asked while inquiring about registration. They and the DMV share a wall, and I am sure get asked questions like that often. Maybe they shouldn’t be answering them...

Well... sadly, all states require a CDL for a coach PLUS, for one over 52,000 lbs,.... well... there are "special" requirements. Let me just say that one has to be well hung... Never-mind that they only get 1.8 mpg. So... I'm kinda stuck where I am...

No doubt!

I have grown weary of posting "varies by state" when it comes to CDL, registration and insurance. Some folks, while trying to be helpful, just assume that the rules that apply in their back yard are universal.

Just be wary of traveling across state lines and knowing those laws as well.

States have reciprocity with each other. If I'm legal in my registered/licensed state, I'm legal in every state I visit.

There is no exemption for commercial vehicle . Once you convert this bus to a RV / motor home It is no longer a commercial vehicle . I live in Ohio and it is exactly that way.

...unless you use your RV/Converted bus...Commercially. Then you do indeed need a CDL.

Just remember the federal definition of commercial as it pertains to CDL is hauling goods, or more then 15 people plus driver. so a business inside your bus does not count. An example would be massage business. That would be clear as there is no transporting of goods for that type of business.

Now if I hook up my 18,000 lb flatbed trailer to my bus and haul some railroad equipment, this could get me in trouble.

Not sure if I understand correctly.

My best understanding is that states that exempt RV's don't make a distinction on platform.

I drove my 45k lb Eagle for years with a standard drivers license as it was titled and registered as an RV.

I know that some states do require a CDL for RV's over 26k lbs and some for RV's over 40' in length.

The states where I have had buses titled (WA, OR, AZ) Have a "blanket" exemption for RV's when it comes to CDL requirements.

Am I missing something?
