Florida Insurance?

Ok so we completed the first step and was able to get the title changed to MotorHome. Now its off to insurance.

I looked at all the posts and found that each thread had multiple state information and those that had Florida information seemed to be dated i.e. 2009. As with insurance it changes constantly.

The posts seemed to say Progressive. When I called them they don't cover converted buses. I tried the commercial policy for personal use, and was denied again.

For those fellow Skoolies in FL, who is your insurance through? And is it liability only or full coverage?

If you've called Progressive and told them you've got a converted school bus-RV your vin is likely marked in their system. They don't insure converted buses... I really try my hardest to warn foks, sorry.

Try going to a local Allstate or State Farm agent's office and see if they can help you out. Or try Good Sam if your conversion is FULLY completed, and "tasteful".

I have heard good Sam will insure a conversion, but you will need to submit pictures and.they will determine if they will insure it.
Don't know from experience, but that's what I have heard.

We didn't get to the part where I gave them my VIN. I would rather be upfront and honest with the insurance company. I don't ever want to be in the position where there is a misunderstanding about what is indured in case I am need to use the insurance.

You don't have to be dishonest.
I left my bus titled as a bus. I'm converting it but theres no reason to tell them that. I have a $600 commercial policy through progressive. I didn't change my title, so their commercial division gave me a commercial policy for private use.
Your best bet is to try good sam. Or a local insurance salesman.

Progressive told me they would only issue a policy for busses if it were a LLC, School, or non profit.

I tried GEICO yesterday to no avail. I have a phone call into a insurance broker. Hopefully they will call me back today.

In Massachusetts I just had to state that it was for personal use. They asked a bunch of questions about if it was a converted School bus. I answered honestly, since it was a bone stock bus. I didn't volunteer any information. It must be different from state to state

Well atleast for two weeks. I was able to get insurance through allstate. They are aware its a bus and it is not completely renovated. I have to take it by so they can take exterior pictures.

So I can drive for atleast two weeks!

I'm in the process of converting a bus myself and live fairly close to you (howey in the Hills). Do you mind if I ask which office you contacted or who it was you spoke to? Also how much is your policy if you don't mind?

I have Allstate... I didn't have to have them take pics. I had insurance in under 30 minutes.
My bus is titled as an RV, so it is NOT a BUS... it is a MOTOR HOME, that is the difference when you are insuring these. They DO know it is a bus conversion.
Don't answer more questions than asked. Keep it simple.
My answers:
Do you have electric? Yes, I had it done by a master electrician (which I did, my son-in-law)
Does it have a toilet? Yes
How many miles a year will you drive it? Around 3000
Do you have experience driving an RV? And what is that experience? Yes, I drove an RV the first time at 18 years old (they required that I type up a statement stating that I had RV driving experience).
That was pretty much it. I signed the docs on line.
My insurance is 271.51 a YEAR. I am 54, female with a clean driving record.

I am in central Florida and converted to a MH today. My insurance agent gave me a number to a company that specializes in this. I called the guy last week and he was very thorough in my dos and dont's. His name is DC and his number is 800.449.8943. He is out of California. He said it would be liability only and between 300-500 a year. I spent the weekend getting the things done he suggested and start my process tomorrow.

I am new to the Forum. Thanks for the info.
I live in Florida. Just bought a short bus in Maine from ebay, and no one will insure my drive from Maine to Florida. They will insure me after I convert it, but not to pick it up. It doesn't make any sense. Does anyone have any info on how to insure the vehicle for the drive from Maine to Florida?

I am unaware of any company that will insure a private individual in Florida for a school bus. I spent an entire day trying to go in and see / call every insurance company I could think only to find out that Florida is one of the states that restricts it. You can get a commercial policy on it (very expensive) for a company but thats it. Otherwise you could take a huge risk and run without insurance but thats a HUGE risk. I ended up getting my bus towed to my house to begin the conversion. Good Luck!

Ask your car insurance company if you are insured on any new or used vehicle you purchase under your existing policy. Don't tell them it's a bus. Tell them you don't know what you are buying yet, if they ask, but want to inquire about insurance to get it home. State Farm covers any vehicle I buy, many others do also. I even asked them about the bus and they confirmed I have 7 days I can drive without purchasing a policy and in Ga. DMV allows me to drive it on a Bill of Sale for 7 days. so technically I don't need to do anything to get it home.

Think I found a loophole. According to this I’m good for up to 30 days on the policy for my other vehicle.
