Yes, registration comes in the mail. Mine came just a few days later. You cannot get a title in Vermont on a vehicle over 15yrs. They give transferable registrations on everything. That will now act as your title, though hold onto the old one just in case.

Just got it today actually! I'm legit! Even got Progressive coverage by filling out the application online.

I'll have to see if I can get the color changed on my registration one it's no longer yellow.

I just completed this method in person and thought I'd share...

I live about an hour away from the nearest VT DMV. Decided to just go up there today and try this, I was in and out within 25 min. All I brought was original title from seller made out to me on back, bill of sale, application and checkbook. I did not do the VIN verification. They made copies of everything and then handed me back the originals.

My bus is a 2002 which as of this year falls into the no title 15yrs and older category. I filled out the form very similar to Nate, top part with my info etc etc.
They had me fill out the private seller's info in section 3B, also the purchase date.

As Make I wrote 'Blue Bird' which they didn't change, Model they put TK (same as Nate's). I typed MH for motor home in body style which they didn't change, I had yellow as color as it is on the title, they said if it's a converted school bus you need to remove all the school bus stuff and it can't be yellow, I told them it's been painted black so they had me change it to black. Under the Trucks section I put Axles: 2, Brake Typ: HYD and Loaded Weight: 26000, left 'Empty Weight' blank cuz I do not know.

They noted on the side there's no NADA value so they charged tax on the amount I entered as purchase price.
Wrote a check for tax plus $76 registration, walked out with plates and a copy of the form as temp reg. and will get the rest in the mail in 7-10 business days. I could not have smiled bigger.

Thanks to all of you for this great thread, it definitely saved me a lot of headache! Hope my experience helps too.

If you told progressive online that you've converted your bus you'll get a cancellation in a few weeks.
Best of luck!

I sent paperwork to Vermont, including the application, copy of Bill of sale, copy of title, and a money order for $76. Everything was sent out April 19th, and I received my plates in my PO Box today. They send out registration and tags separately.

My bus is a 97 Saf-T-Liner. I had no problems and the turn around time was less than 2 weeks.

From past conversations, VT is much easier for registration than a number of adjacent states. Still, congratulations. It feels good to become totally legit.

You might talk to Progressive and go the van route. What I like to think of as the Amish build.

Massachusetts required a RMV1 form. It is filled out by the insurance company. It's required for all registration or title changes... So until I actually get to the point that I can switch insurance companies, I am going to leave well enough alone.

no insurance penalties?

I submitted everthing last week some time so hopefully all goes well. I don't remember reading or seeing anything about providing proof of insurance to VT. Are there penalties for not having it insured while its not being driven? or only if one gets caught driving without insurance?

Contacted GoodSam today. They're quoting me $350/yr for liability only, and they want pics of the RV features (seating, kitchen, bathroom, sleeping) before they will enter I'll to an agreement with me. I'm not done with the build, so this may not work for now :/

In this state I couldn't get insured as a self built motorhome, but progressive would insure me as a van also on the commercial liability only policy. They don't even offer roadside service, but I got Good Sam roadside just in case.

My title says van. My VIN says bus.

You can try a local agent, in person.
But if you filled in the online info your vin is likely red flagged in their system.
Good Sam may be your only hope.

sign the title?

Well, we just bought a bus! I live in NC and want to register the Vermont way. I have a question about the title. I bought the bus off Craigslist in TN and got the bill of sale notarized. He gave me the title, but he didn't sign it over to me. He said TN does not require the title signed over.

1) Since I have a bill of sale notarized, can I send the title as is?

2) If the back of the title needs to be signed over to me, and I somehow get both signatures on there, do they need to be notarized as well?

As I read here I find it ironic that so many people want, and have so much trouble titling their bus as an rv/motorhome. I went to the tax office today in Texas to title my bus as a bus and they actually made me title it as a motorhome because the seats are all out and it has a porta potty and bed in it. Now Im waiting to see how the insurance company responds since I have a commercial for private use policy.

Kind of strange that he wouldn't sign the title over for you. What would it have hurt?

From what I understand the notarized bill of sale takes the place of the signature on the back of the title. I'm guessing the bill of sale was from the school district?

I usually walk a title into the DMV office specifically so I'll know imedately if there is a hangup.
