Insurance issues really deserve their own thread?

Many times you will get hugely different answers from the same company, depending on who you talk to, even it seems depending what they had for breakfast.

Or talking to a different agent, especially an agent in another state.

There does not seem to be any one proven path to success, you just have to keep trying until you get lucky.

Insurance issues already have like 50 threads.

You need to put the title in your name regardless but this is not an insurance thread.

I have recently purchased a 1980 Eagle bus with a bus title. I live in New Jersey and I wanted to go the Vermont route. My question is, is there any reason I couldn't take the three hour ride and do it in person at a DMV office? Should I convert the title in my name at the NJ dmv first or just go with the signed Ohio title and bill of sale? Thanks for any help!!!!

You can definitely go up there and do it in person. Worked great for me. No need to convert the title, but you will probably need a VIN verification since the title is out-of-state. I'd recommend getting this done beforehand by your local/state police and bringing it with you (unless you're actually taking the bus up there, in which case do it there), or you can go without it and VT will give you real plates and a one month temp registration while you complete the verification by mail.

This is the form you will need filled out for the verification: http://dmv.vermont.gov/sites/dmv/fil...rification.pdf

In my experience, there has been some confusion over the"VIN Verifications Out-of-State" section of the instructions on that form. I had one local cop refuse to fill it out, because she thought it meant that only a state trooper was authorized. Ironically, I eventually got it filled out by a mere field service technician from the same department. I then went to the station and persuaded some clerk to type a brief note on their letterhead saying that the tech was employed by the department. Worked like a charm.

If you end up having to argue this point with your local cop, the key phrase is "or by those personnel authorized by that state to perform VIN verifications." Meaning that anyone who's allowed to do a verification *in your state* is also allowed to fill out the Vermont form, even if they aren't a state-level official.

Thank you for the response!
I did not know about the VIN verification, I would have definitely went up there without it! I have a friend who is a retired chief, so he may be able to help. Unfortunately taking the bus there is not an option as it's still in Ohio and I cannot legally drive it without a CDL. So I'll have to prepare everything and make the trip.
So I'll need:
Ohio title signed to me
Completed VIN verification
Notarized bill of sale
And I guess some general ID as well.

Sure thing! Don't forget the note on police department letterhead confirming the employment of the cop who fills out the verification form.

I don't think the bill of sale needs to be notarized, but I guess it couldn't hurt. Mine wasn't and nobody said anything.

The VIN verification seems to be a pretty routine thing for most police, it's not like you should need to call in a favor or anything. It's maybe a bit unusual to be doing it for another state's DMV, but I think I just got unlucky with an extra paranoid cop on my first try.

Oh, I just realized you're not in the same state as the bus... Maybe you can get the seller to handle the VIN verification? The bus has to be physically present for that part, so you're not going to be able to get it done in NJ.

Otherwise, your best option might be going up to VT without the verification, getting the temporary registration, which will allow you to bring the bus home legally, and then completing the VIN verification by mail.

Uh oh... Would you think getting the bus in my name in an NJ title first would allow me to bypass this? Because that's not a problem. Would that mess with the whole Vermont process?

I don't think so. They told me that any out-of-state title requires a VIN verification. OTOH, it seems like some people earlier in this thread weren't subjected to that requirement, and I'm not sure if that's because it's a new-ish policy or what.

It's barely any extra work doing the verification by mail, so I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. Even though the registration is temporary, they still give you your real permanent plates, so you'll look totally normal on the road, and the temp registration is good for at least a month (maybe 60 days? can't remember which) so you'll have plenty of time to get the bus home and send in the verification.

I did notice that as well. Could be a policy change as you said, or just the clerk you happened to get. Well I think my plan will be to go and get the temp registration at the very least, and work on the VIN verification later. The goal is to get this bus back from Ohio to NJ as soon as possible legally. Everyone keeps telling me winging it without a CDL as it stands is a poor choice haha.

VIN verifications are only required if you dont have any ownership documents, to my knowledge. That being said, some of the staff might give you a hard time. I just registered in my wife's name for the second time without a verification. You don't need a notarized bill of sale. Just have both parties sign it.

What was your turnaround time? Today was business day number 11 since my form arrived in their mailbox

I guess I got unlucky. VIN verification for out-of-state titles does seem to be their official policy, based on the paperwork, so I wouldn't advise anybody to count on not having to do it, but it does seem like they make some exceptions.

need to wait?

newb from WI here...
just bought a bus in Mississippi and plan to fly down and drive it back up. Going to go the VT registration route as well.

I dont have a VIN verification from local PD down there, but i do have title in hand already and pics of VIN plate. Do I need to get that and send it all in (AND then wait to get it back) before driving it back up?

I dont have a CDL. Thus why i am asking if i need all my docs back from VT changing title to an RV before being able to drive it.

I have driven large vehicles before, but not for that long of distance in multiple states.
Thx!
