Vermont has no jurisdiction or concern over other states lost revenue...
Remember -- "title jumping"; "back registration fees/fines";
These are government constructs only for the purpose of a government entity to collect more revenue...
I am gleefully happy Vt wisely chooses to accept money to circumvent all that bullsh!t... In fact, now that the dust has settled I'm going to splurge on Vt. vanity wildlife plates just to funnel them more money!

My sentiments pretty much exactly. I like the way you think Sir! It’s not the first time either, that I’ve found you making good sense on matters of government overreach. Dare I call it libertarian in character.

The waiting stinks, though. It sure takes them a while to turn this around. Going on 3 weeks, and they don't have record of even receiving my paperwork. Makes me nervous since I sent them my original title. I have a copy of it at home, but with no title, I feel like I'm in limbo.
Called Vermont today, and they asked whether my check cashed yet? I told them that it had not. The guy on the other end basically said that when you check cashes, that's the first sign that things are moving forward.
UGH... patience, I know...patience!!

Filling out my paperwork now... finally! My phone won’t let me go through all the replies. Did anyone have trouble with registration if their body style was “BU”?

Is your bus so new that you were required to send the original title?
I believe anything over 15 years old Vt. specifically says to only send a copy.

Yes.
My bus is a 2008. If it is newer than 15 years, you'll get a new title for the vehicle, but you have to send in your old title to them. SO... I have no title (other than my copy) and the bill of sale from the company I bought it from.
I'm sure that it will work out, but it's just nerve-wracking to wait!

It was nerve-racking but so exciting when the check cleared! Only took a couple of days to get the plates after that. A few days later they sent the new registration and stickers.your four week wait is almost up.

Do I need to pay to switch my new bus title?
I have recently purchased a bus and my name is just written on the title right now, do I need to first get the title transferred to my name in order to send it to Vermont?
Also I tried to avoid tax and said I paid less for the bus, are they going to make me pay a gift tax?
Thank you for the help this place is so awesome!

No. Sending the 'old' title (photocopy if 15yrs or older) to Vt is what they'll use to issue your new 'title'.
Yes. Minimum purchase / taxable price for Vt is $300. Vermont's doing you a tremendous favor, why rip them off...?
If you claim a very low purchase price (like in my case, my bus was "free"; I literally paid ONE US dollar for it)
you'll want to justify why the low price. For example, my bus did not run when I got it.

Sorry I misspoke! (memories a dangerous thing!)
Vermont's sale tax is 6%.
Vermont's minimum net taxible amount (block 6, on the VT tax & title application) is $500. It would be nice if they said this on their website instructions but...
So what you pay is only $30.00 in tax. This is 6% of $500
There will be other fees for you to add up as you complete the form...
My total was cost was only $106.00 -- a true bargain!

With this method, does it matter how long you've had the bus? I've had mine almost a year, but my local SOS keeps giving me the run around or a list a million miles long.
I apologize if this question has been asked and answered before, but it's all been so much information that I think I have information overload.

Don't believe it matters. I looked on the Vermont DMV site looking for fees for late registration, and could find nothing.

My bus was last registered in 2014 to a R.I. school district. From there to a licensed dealer (who is allowed to sign the title and then resell without getting new title/registration). It sat in MA till 2017 when it came to Ohio (and never got registered) till it came to me in 2019...

Thanks! Even if they DID decide to charge me a late fee... I don't think I'd care too much at this point. Heck, Michigan did because I was a day late getting there the first time and I got over that bit. It's just the rest of it that feels like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall. I bring in everything they ask for and they still expect more stuff. I was starting to expect them to ask for the blood of a virgin and my firstborn child. Oiy.
Thanks again!
