I just got my Vermont registration

I assume the plates are on the way but I haven't gotten them yet.

What are my options for insurance? My bus is a 2004 IC CE200. I live in New Jersey. I've been reading about insurance here on the forum and I still don't have a good feel for how to go about getting it insured.

It's tough finding insurance to cover you during the build out. Most insurance companies will not cover you as an RV until 4 of the 6 requirements have been made. Look for a "commercial for private use" policy during the build phase.

Contact Kelly Newsome with Allstate (352-326-9300 KellyNewsome1@allstate.com). Kelly knows skoolies and can write in many states. For those she can not write in, she has agent/contacts to serve you.

I will second this. I live in Indiana, called Kelly in Florida 3 days after buying our bus in Missouri. She had me hooked up with an agent in Kentucky within 2 hours, and I had an Indiana RV policy before the day was over.

I got the plates yesterday so I have everything but insurance. I'll wait for a while to call Kelly because in the next day or 2 I'm going to pull the end of the bus off and start putting the end cap back on so I'm not going to be driving it for a while.

While you build, progressive will insure as comercial for private use. The price is reasonable. Our 40 foot Amtrans insured for about 250 per year. Once you are built progressive will be unlikely to cover it. Then begins the local hunt.

It's not unlikey, It's definite. Progressive has put out notices this year that they no longer insure converted buses. My policy for build out was only $171 from Progressive

Go to the thread below. It lays out the whole process for registering in Vermont. It has some links to the Vermont DMV website which has a lot of information. I don't recall specifically what documentation you HAVE to have to register but you should be able to find it.

I called Kelly and she answered, 'So you want to insure a skoolie?'

Did she write a policy for you? What state are you in? Oh I see, Rhode Island.

I'm waiting until I'm closer to being ready to drive it before I put insurance on it. I haven't closed on my house yet and there are issues that could derail the sale so I'm also waiting for those to resolve.

She connected me to an all state agent in RI who gave me a quote of 800 for six months. I have not done it yet as I am also in the demo phase.

Gah, $1600 a year? That's awfully steep, mine is $350 (liability only). Rhode Island is pretty bad for insurance, but I don't think they're 400% worse.

The telephone number for Kelly in your reply didn't work. It got a generic recording, I don't even think it got me to Allstate.

I just searched for Kelly Newsome on the forum and found another thread that showed her number as 352-326-9300. That number got me to Glenda who took my information and will pass it on to Kelly.

To continue my story. I just got a quote from Allstate in New Jersey by calling Kelly Newsome. The quote is for my primary vehicle (2004 Expedition) and the bus. It looks like it'll come at around $2000 per year for liability on both vehicles. I don't have time right now to delve into the details but wanted to report on what I just got. More later as I discuss it with the agent.
