Kansas laws/requirements

I am new to Kansas and looking at buses to first use as storage an then hopefully convert to an rv.

Found some locally that I am going to check out in the morning. They have nebraska tags that expired in April on them and look to have been recently retired. All three internationals one with a dt466.

Any info on what is required in KS? Haven't had much luck finding anything online. Sent an email to the KHP.

My plans really are a few seats for max 10 people. Potty. Fridge. Some bunks.

What part of Kansas? I'm pretty new to KC and am looking to do conversion.

If you hold a Kansas Drivers License you will need a Non-Commercial Class B for a vehicle over 26000 lb GVWR

I guess I mean for titling it an RV in Kansas.

I live in Wamego Kansas area West of Topeka and just bought a short bus. The bus came from the Missouri side of KC. Currently I have it insured as passenger van and will change to RV once completed. I got my VIN inspection done (Big thanks to local Sheriff for coming to your house) and I'm ready to go tag vehicle. I called the treasurer and they said they will send me to appraisers office to ask me some questions. I wondered if I could get a 30 or 60 day tag as is before doing the conversion and then getting it as an RV as I finish up the conversion? Any thoughts? What all do they mean by self contained? Electrical system? Running water? Toilet, etc?

They usually mean that you have fitted some or all of a list of features.

120V electric
Toilet
Cooking facilities
Food Storage (fridge)
Beds
Running water

The list varies, and what they accept as "fitted" varies too.

Some states only demand an affidavit saying that the changes have, or are about to be, made. Others require inspections.

That was the information I was looking for. A police officer told me that Busses cannot be titled "RV" unless they were converted by at certified 3rd party.

I never heard this before, so the information on that document is helpful.

I need to get my rig to Kansas to complete the conversion and on to inspection.

Police officers tend to be like internet commenters. They tell you what they think is the truth, with the added veneer of a badge.

Like DMV staff, they are frequently wrong.

I think it depends on the county, I got insurance first and then went to my courthouse here in central Kansas after explaining what I had they changed the title. It could even depend on the person you get behind the counter. Wouldn’t hurt to go to the DMV and give it a shot worst they can say is no or not until your conversion is done.
