Liability only??

So skoolie insurance…are we talking liability only? 30k is a bunch to put into a vehicle and not be insured. Does anybody get a policy with coverage other than straight liability?

Considering how home-brew most skoolies are... there is no way in hell an adjuster, appraiser, risk analyst, underwriter, or any other type of quant will be able to accurately assess any potential anything on a skoolie. For a number of reasons, actually. Primarily, there really aren't enough skoolies out there for meaningful data to be had; the ones that are are so all-over the spectrum that you can't really make real decisions on them, and lastly, there really isn't much of a call for it unless you're planning on trying to screw the insurance company.

You could possibly get something more than liability insurance if you're driving a prevost chassis or an MCI or something more substantial that is purpose built AND you have it converted by some kind of major conversions company.

But for home-brew? Not on your life. Even if you keep all the receipts, and document the process. And you pay out the ass for your premiums, while also accepting a contract that, one way or another, let's them off the hook for pretty much everything. That's basically the point of insurance.

no idea on skoolie but this is handled in the classic car community with declared value insurance.. now it isnt a blanket thing that the insurance company will pay your full declared value in a full loss, however doing exactly what you mention, receipts, lots of photos, videos, documentation ,etc are exactly how its done.. its often a fight but ive known people to get decent payouts.. I got a good payout on the 81 completely custom fleetwood cadillac i had that i wiped out on the side of a Semi truck.. I had photo after photo of that car.. a scrap book of how I built it and what I did.. now maybe my pasyout was good because the trucker was high as a kite (in the late 90s / early 00's weed def wasnt legal anywhere ).. but what got the numbers higher and higher was all the docs i had of that build.. no I couldnt build anither one for what I got but I got a lot more than a regular 20 year old fleetwood in excellent shape wouldve netted me..

my busses carry full coverage through 2 different insurers (due to age limits on them).. but both are declared value policies that I update each year when i renew..

That's good to know about the declared value thing.

i have full coverage on my rig. after i finished my electrical, i figured it was good time to cover my ass.

the insurance company lists my bluebird as a wanderlodge of the same year.
that wanderlodge depreciates the same as everything else, so it may not be worth carrying the coverage any more.

when i had liability only, i was paying only $40/year, now, with collision, comprehensive, liabilty, and roadside i pay about $1000/year.

hope i never make a claim on it.

Hello, I just purchased a 98 International 3000. The bus is housed in Alabama and I am having difficulty getting insurance. Any Suggestions?

I have mine through Good Sam, who I believe underwrote it through National General. It's funny because Good Sam provides my insurance, but won't provide the roadside assistance they are famous for (I have Coachnet for that)

Please forgive my typo. LOL I agree. I am trying to get the insurance today or tomorrow because I will be taking a short trip Thursday (a few hours down the road) then next week I will be taking it to Chicago for 7 days.

I have commercial basic liability on the bus. Anything else was to hard to come by in Michigan. Seemed to be the easiest way without jumping through hoops. About $800 a year with progressive.

That is why those of us willing to do so should put in the work to fix that problem.

******* insurance questions.

quit calling it a bus
to an insurance agent or the dmv.... a bus delivers people for money.
allstate and state farm dont insure buses

you want rv insurance.

some years when i renew plates in person, i'll slip and say i need plates for the bus. the clerk looks at their screen confused. on their screen my "bus" shows up as a "rv" so they don't know which vehicle im talking about.
