Problem with registering as MH in VT

My application for a MH registration in Vermont got returned today. The thing they want me to fill out is section 3B, specifically the name and address of the person or company I acquired the vehicle from.

Problem is, I purchased the bus from somebody on eBay and I don't have any info on them other than their eBay username, their real-life first name and their cell phone number (I paid via squareup and the bus was delivered to me so I never met the dude). I asked him for a BOS but he never replied and I didn't pursue it since I didn't need one for the VT registration.

Wat do? Can I just use eBay's name and address?

Did you buy a bus with no title?

Well no, but the title the seller gave me was the signed-over title from the school system he had purchased the bus from a few years ago (in other words my seller had never retitled it in his own name). The date had been left blank so I filled that in and then gave up that signed-over title to PennDOT when I re-titled the bus in PA.

I guess I should just use that school system's name and address for the VT registration (especially since that's probably what's in PA's system now as the previous title holder), but I wonder if they ever audit this stuff and the school system would say they have no idea who I am and they sold the bus in 2015, not 2019 (I still need to get a BOS out of him because I paid tax on the sale amount for my PA title and apparently PA just started auditing these reported values - I dunno if my eBay records will be sufficient).

BTW yes the title thing seemed shady but the bus was already bought and delivered by that point.

So basically you bought it from the school system, so use their name and address. Your deal is less shady than mine was. My seller was in a different state and the title was in the bus here, so I told him I would just sign his name to it when I sold it. That way I don't have to wait weeks for a new title to come in my name.

I sure hope DMV people don't frequent this forum.

Thanks for your help.

Did you get some sort of ebay confirmation of payment like paypal? Might be able to print whatever you have from ebay and use that. You should have an email saying you won the auction if it was an auction.

So you currently have a PA title in your name?

I have an email from eBay saying I won the auction but the payment was set up outside of paypal/ebay, so the listing had a thing where both the buyer and seller have to click a button that says "payment was received/delivered" or whatever and that's all eBay knows about the deal.

I have a squareup payment receipt that it turns out actually does have a physical address, but the name is still just some random internet-type username that I can't put on the VT application.

Per marc01's suggestion I think I'm just going to use the name and address of the school system that was on the original title I received.

Yeah, it's titled as a BUS in my name in PA now (I did a title transfer only since you can only do the motorhome retitling here after conversion is completed and inspected).

I guess what I am thinking here is that because you have a title that establishes you as the owner, so no need to transfer ownership.

I agree 100% but the Vermont DMV feels differently.

Preventing their state from being used to "launder" stolen vehicles.

But since I have a PA title in hand, I figured they would assume that it is not a stolen vehicle because PA would have checked that before issuing a title (I don't know whether PennDOT checks that but I assume they do).

Also, listing the name and address of the previous owner would not prevent laundering unless they actually sent a letter to the previous owner and expected a response concerning the sale.

Just discouraging / preventing, don't need perfect results.

Fact that non-residents can get plates mail order is something to be very grateful for.

Buying a vehicle from someone not requiring ID, not even knowing where they live, not getting a written BoS is sketchy AF.

Personally I make the seller meet me at DMV to do the transfer together.

Unless so cheap I just don't care if it's a junker.

Smile VT

Hey Mus,

I’m in Vermont and had no problem with motor vehicle. Registered it as a car, and they were very helpful when I explained what our intent was. Cheaper and easier then I thought it would be.

I agree you basically am purchasing from PA.

I also used Progressive to insure. Cheapest and easiest solution to cover bus.

Look forward to more chats if your local. Currently having trouble finding a mechanic that will help get us started.

Progressive is no longer covering Skoolie conversions, any existing policy will not be renewed upon expiration.

Yeah getting the policy initially has never been the problem. Its the moment you tell them you're converting it.
Oddly they don't care if you turn it into a mobile office. Just not a motorhome.
