Rebuilt Title Affecting Potential Resale Value

Hey all,

I found a bus I really like - 2000 e450 shuttle bus, 7.3l and 24' long with 83k miles for $6k asking. All seemed well until mentioned it had a rebuilt title, which was a red flag considering it wasn't originally stated in the listing and we had been discussing the bus for a couple days at that point.

I'm waiting to see the Carfax, hopefully that will tell if the odometer has been reset etc. I was told that the damage was only cosmetic and was on the side of the vehicle, not the front. Currently shows no damage at all besides some mild paint issues around the top.

My question is, how much would a rebuilt title affect potential resale value down the line? Since I have access to highly skilled tradesmen in my family, I'm planning on trying to do a very quality conversion with nice woods etc. I'm hoping to get at least a few years of personal use and have the option to one day sell the bus and use the money as a down payment on a house. So I am weary of the rebuilt title.

Resale value is the least of your worries. You don't build a skoolie for resale value. But a rebuilt / salvage title can cause big insurance problems or a complete inability to get coverage at all.

And, forget resale value, house deposit pipe dream.

Make it nice because you want it nice, for while you're using it.

Efforts beyond that will not "pay off" economically

To get a decent resale on a skoolie in my opinion it needs to be exceptional and unique.. sorry but a shuttle won’t wow people in the least as far as a down the line buyer.

Now using the rebuilt salvage as a negotiator will. A shuttle like that isn’t a 6 k bus on a good day. Offer him 3, if he takes it out the other 3 you would r spent in an investment to start your house fund..

Never EVER believe a seller about WHY a vehicle has a salvage title.
I see first hand in my neighbors shops how they cut cars in half and half-ass weld them back together. And also replace dash with lower mileage odometers. I've also fixed 'totaled' cars that nothing but the radio cut out of the dash. It really depends on the value, the more it has the more damage they can fix.
It is a good way to get a 20-30% price reduction as a buyer, but same deal for the next buyer too (when you sell).

Are you sure it isn't "incomplete chassis" ? If so, that is completely normal for a cutaway bus like that. Very different from a salvage title.
