Registration/Title in Illinois
Hi, I am trying to register my bus/RV in Illinois so I can plate it and drive it around. I currently have the bus insured as a commercial vehicle because of State Farm (I needed to insure after I bought it to transfer it home.)
I can not insure it as an RV until I, according to them, put a Sleeping Area, Cooking Area, and a Bathroom in the bus as well as remove anything that makes it a "school" bus.
I was hoping to work on the bus in a couple different places due to where the resources are located. I cant do this since I dont have any registration for it.
Here is Illinois's registration process in a nutshell
"Bring the vehicle title, proof of car insurance, odometer disclosure statement, and an Application for a Vehicle Transaction (Form VSD 190)."
everything there makes sense except that I want to register it as an RV but the insurance is for a commercial bus.
So I guess the short version of my question is, can I register my bus as an RV even though it is insured as a bus?
Also any trouble that anyone has run into during this process would be great to know.
Thank you!

Naperville/West Chicago area. Do you think this would make a difference depending on which DMV I go to?

All I can say is what I told you in the pm, can't make any promises
A different DMV in another county might question why your doing the paperwork in a different county.

I know this thread is old but I am curious what was said in the PM. I am wanting to buy a bus but i am afraid of all the hoops i will have to jump through. I called the DMV in Clinton Il and they were not much help. They told me to call Springfield and then was told to call DOT. nobody knew what to do. Is the inspection hard to pass?
if i am correct, all i need is 4 out of the 6
Just need a camping propane stove
bucket of drinking water
gas/electric fridge
camping toliet
heat/ac with power other than engine
12V to 110 V power inverter
i guess i better find insurance

Yes a mock-up of the required elements usually works for the DMV. You're on the right track.
A lot of people have a problem with parking their new 40' trophy in their communities.

How long did it take the Sec of State Police to come do the inspection check list? What did you use for your "cooking Facility"? Can you just use a camping propane oven? Can you use a composting toilet? and what did you user for your Potable Water supply system? I am just curious. Thanks for your response. I appreciate it.

There was no inspection. I had to prove nothing. Just went in with the title, said that it was an rv. Walked out with rv plates. All that other stuff should only be for insurance.

I went to state farm and got a commercial policy for now. Until i can prove to the underwriters it really is an rv. I had no problems getting insurance either.

I have had 3 different buses insured with State Farm and they have been very good to me.
#1 was insured as a motorhome. #2 & #3 are currently registered as buses (commercial for personal use). As soon as the conversion is complete they will convert to Motorhome.

So I ended up buying a bus. Went to the DMV. I received RV plates got insurance. Its been almost 4 weeks and i got the title back today. It shows BUS on the Illinois title. I guess I will call SOS police to come do an inspection. I just don't want to have to pay another 100 bucks. F***

Sorry to hear
Also in Illinois and just registered, same as you- RV plates and 4 weeks to title, but fortunately titled as motorhome.
Don't forget to send another 2% of your paycheck in to Springfield so the crooks can party.
