South Carolina Registration Success!

Hi all,

I just wanted to share my experience with registering and titling a skoolie in South Carolina.

First off, I drove to West Virginia to purchase my bus. 2007 IC CE300. 40 ft, air brake, 31,000 GVWR. Drove it home, no tags, just a BOS and insurance with no issues.

I live in Edgefield County, which may have helped with the ease of my process, but walked into the tax auditor's office, paid my taxes on the bus. No questions asked. Drove to the DMV, walked in with my receipt for paying my taxes, bill of sale, WV title and told them I needed to register and title my bus as a motorhome and that I have already pulled the seats out.

Paid my SC title fees and walked out 10 mins later with a plate, registration and title in the mail!

The only concern I had going into this was the bus being 31,000 GVWR and being required to get a Class E license. But when filling out the title form, it asked for empty weight and GVW. I wrote down 17,000 lbs empty and 31,000 for GVW as that was what the WV title said. To my surprise my registration says 17,000 on it. So I will likely be playing dumb when it comes to needing to change my license if I ever end up in that scenario.

I used an independent agent to find me insurance and was able to get Safeco to cover it

To cover what? A bus, an RV, a commercial policy for personal use?

RV, personal use. $550 a year

You realize if you need that insurance before completing a conversion, you'll find them denying your claim. I think insurance is one of the most important factors. It again was obviously get the DMV to believe you have an V, gonna be harder to convince your insurance. I'm surprised they insured it as an RV without an inspection or pics.

I agree about the importance of the insurance. I originally was going to use StateFarm as they are my current home and auto provider. However they would not cover it as a bus. It had to be converted until they would. My next plan was to use Allstate and Kelly Newsome. However I was in a pinch to get insurance quickly to drive the bus home.

Once my conversion is completed, I will be switching back to StateFarm.

Gotcha, I went through the same thing with SF, so I got a policy with Progressive before they stopped insuring Skoolies. I now pay SF $4.11/m for liability on the RV.

FYI- did you know State Farm insured you on the way home from purchase? They insure anything you buy for 1 week, even though they won't insure it as a bus.
