Strange goings on in Kentucky
I saw this a week or so ago behind my local produce market. A medium sized Thomas bus on a Freightliner chassis. It appeared to have an air mattress on the floor in the back and no other modifications. Even looked like most of the seats were still in place. ODD THING WAS THE LICENSE PLATE. 10,000 LB. Same as my half ton pickup.
"How did they do this?", you may axe yourself. I am perplexed myself.
Anybody have any answers?

Guessing the license plate is from another vehicle.

Could be. I'm debating whether I should inquire next time I go to buy fresh maters. The bus was still there yesterday when I did a drive-by.

In PA, it seems you can just retitle a school bus as anything you like by mailing in a PennDOT title change form. Some people have done this to change to a motorhome, others have changed their bus to a station wagon. There appears to be no process for checking on the validity of such changes, which means they're probably valid until you get a ticket or in an accident and then you have big problems. Perhaps KY is the same.

Could very well be. The state has several different GVWR based plates. 10,000 is the lightest.
But I have not been able to find any info on the state transportation cabinet site, or on this wonderful forum.
And I know Mitch & Rand won't take my call...

Sime jurisdictions you can just lower your GVWR
basically a promise to not exceed that
but big fines, and insurance won't cover if you do

Put a note on the bus to call you and ask them.

Or.... they took the plate off their truck and put it on the bus to get it home. People do that stuff all the time in my area... they don't register them... put insurance on them and swap plates. Big issue if you get caught.
KY dot is pretty strict on things so it would be odd for them to retitle a bus as a truck with a plate weight well under the empty weight of the bus.

Is it over 10k lbs though? A stripped bus with nothing more then an air mattress would likely be close to that.
I'm not from KY. But if I were to guess, I'd say the 10k tag is likely cheaper to register, and the state gives a person the option to change it to what they want it to be. So, as long as they're never caught being over 10k, they'd likely never have problems.

My 11-window was 16,246 pounds stripped. I don't think an 8-window would be less than 2/3 of that.

I agree. My 2013 2 wheel drive extended cab Silverado is 5,000 lb. or so dry. I know that bus is more than twice as heavy.

I think that you are all weigh off.
Its still an operational schoolbus and the driver is taking naps while weighting around to pick up the kids.

I have a gas engine f700 flatbed 20 foot that weighs 11,000 empty. Even an empty bus shell that has to weigh over 13,000. Not even close to 10k.
