Woah woah woah... Insurance?
So the trick is to insure it as a "Bus" and not an "RV"?
I keep getting dropped when I get insurance~

After talking with my state farm agent I decided the commercial bus policy was going to work for me. It is titled as an RV which because of the GVW of the bus here in Kansas I believe I have to have a non commercial class A or B drivers licence, which I already have.

I should be covered all the way around.

thanks
Cliff

Good to know - I've been asking for RV Conversion insurance - I honestly think the issue is carbon monoxide and its history of killing people~

Have you tried not mentioning the word "conversion"? Or simply insuring it as a bus? I got a commercial policy for around 700 a year.

Do you have a CDL or non-commercial class A or B license? I think that in Virginia, if I go this route, I will need a CDL. From the VA web site, I can't tell if there is a "non-commercial" class A or B license. It's all very confusing to me.

I am thinking about registering the thing as a bus or truck while I do the conversion so I won't have to buy a pickup truck to haul the stuff necessary to build it with.

Sweet. Vriginia is a more restrictive state for vehicles as are most states on the east coast. Lots of people, lots of roads, lots of hijinks and crazyness.

I am currently on the phone with Progressive insurance looking into commercial insurance. I might form a Research and Development LLC for "creative repurposing".

Progressive ripped me off and then dropped me, so I switched to GMAC. They've always gave me good bus-conversion insurance (Liability only for about $500 a year).

State Farm insurance is completely worthless, according to all the people who have had to file a claim. Apparently, regardless of what they tell you, they only insure the outside hull, and your rig isn't insured while at its' garaging address. Some said they were told their homeowner's policy covered what was inside the RV, but after paying the additional deductible, discovered that was completely false. But, if you put your stuff outside the RV, and someone steals it, then it's covered :/

As for getting your bus re-titled, that's awesome! I had a similar experience in Illinois. It's always nice when things go smoothly.

Hmmmm --- Might be interesting/useful to start a separate thread/poll rating various insurance companies and how they perform regarding RV & conversions based on real world experiences. Could break it down into different aspects like "responsiveness"..."price"...whatever.

Just a thought.

Damn good idea. Anyone start it yet? I'll look around and if nobody has, I will.
