Title to RV in Washington state

I just came back from doing face time at DOL and WA State Patrol (WSP) and after getting a whole lot of wrong information, the WSP officer contacted the head of the VIN dept. and now I got the info, should it help anyone else. New rule is no you do not need it inspected by Labor and Insurance. No you do not need it inspected by WSP. What you need is to get it weighed then type up a letter stating that you have met the requirement for an RV (in this state it just says lodging, cooking and sewage disposal) and DO NOT SIGN it until you go to register it at DOL as they want you to do it in front of them. Then presto it is an RV (though haven't done this yet but here is hoping). Now have to figure out insurance, no one seems to want to return my calls on that one, so if anyone in WA state has found an insurer, please let me know.

I just registered mine as an rv in Seattle. It was super easy, didn't even need a letter. Any luck with the insurance? I'm looking into it today

Wow you didn't even need weight? Both King Co. So I wonder why different. Haven't tried for RV insurance yet as they want pictures of comple RV and I am just ripping up flooring.

Same here. Two buses in WA so far.

The first licensing place I went to started talking about WSP inspection and I left. I went to the next place down the road and hand no problem.

From what I have gathered, it does look like some of the offices are operating on outdated info and asking folks to jump through unneeded hoops.

I know the lady at the licensing agency I use, so it sometimes streamlines stuff. I just got insured through a local State Farm agent, didn't seem like an issue for them. I now am waiting to see what the underwriters have to say. I'll update when I get a confirmation

I have had buses insured with State Farm off & on for 16 years. They have treated me well so far.

I just moved from Granite Falls to Dayton.

I used to dive at Alki. We had great fun there.

I was told State Farm was good - did you mention school bus conversion or just say RV? I also read they want pictures and have their own ideas of what an RV is so that one has to be almost done. Be curious to know how it goes. I have commercial insurance now, but technically void as soon as I took out the seats so can't really drive the thing yet.

It was just as easy in FL. I did have issues running into getting insurance. Most companies stoped the conversation when I mention bus conversion. Allstate did insure it but I had to take it to one of their offices so they could take pictures of it. They were really curious about the project and were looking forward to seeing the completed project.

I gave them the V.I.N. and told the agent I'm turning it into a camping rig. They made no mention of wanting photos or an inspection. Granted, I just got liability and medical for it. Full coverage would have been $1,200+/year. I figure that I can get a theft/vandalism rider once I have built it out. Right now it is an empty shell, with only 2 seats remaining

NathanRatPatrol - which DOL in Seattle did you go to? Perhaps I should go to the same office you went to.

They will mention the requirements not met as soon as you try and file a claim. You will find you wasted every penny you paid for insurance. I fear for too many people who told DMV it was something it wasn't and then insured it as something it isn't. Insurance companies look for any reason they can to deny your claim.

Taking out the seats shouldn't change your insurance on it. It just means you don't need a CDL to drive it.

I am sure I am dredging up a zombie thread, but I was wondering if any of you remember what your bus weighed when you scaled it? I need to get my title done, but I have a bunch of boxes in the bus at the moment. (Also Washington state. Bellingham)

Thanks!

Did you have to get it inspected? Just wondering if the above info was still valid...Thanks!

I am heading in today. Can't find an office near me that doesn't have its head firmly wedged in their backside, so I am making the drive to Snohomish.

I will update when I know more.

You know the old saying about "The best laid plans of mice and men?" lol

I was getting ready to go that morning, last thing to do before I left, (I live about 75 miles from Snohomish), I opened my safe to grab the title...and it is not there. I have every other vehicle and trailer title in there, but the bus is not to be found. So, since it is still titled in Idaho, I am stuck until I can get over there and request a lost title.

I will try again in a few months when I get the new title in hand.

Which office were you going to go to? I'd be willing to try and be the guinea pig.
