Post Title - truck vs. RV vs. bus - questions

So I have a small bus, a 2000 GMC 4 window tiny thing. It's title is clearly listed as a BUS. When I call for insurance I can't get anyone to give me any kind of quote for anything but commercial. -- should I be going to the DMV first (I'm in North Carolina/Asheville) and seeing about the title change before insurance? I guess I'm just feeling a little lost and if someone could explain this to me like I'm 2 that would be great.

Hi Abby,

I have seen some of your videos, love bluegrass music.
Have you done anything to convert the bus to an rv/motorhome? If so then yes you need to get the title changed before you ask for insurance.

If North Carolina gives to much of a hassle to change the title look up on this forum How to immediatEly register your bus as an RV without conversion:

Each state is different. I'm in Ohio, changed my title to motorhome without much hassle. I bought liability insurance and told agent its a motorhome. 3 years later we want to change insurance companies but the vin comes up as cutaway and only want to give me commercial insurance so I went back to my old company. Be vague about what it is and what you are doing with it.

YES. It now has a bed, fridge, propane burner, closet, RV batteries/power - no shower or bathroom however. No heat/cooling system (yet). It's definately an RV though.

Right now when you look it up by VIN it CLEARLY comes up as a bus. I'm in NC, it's a TN title.

video of interior of bus from one of my livestreams:

If you haven't tried National General try finding a local agent for a quote.

Looks like National General won't insure unless it has a bathroom, otherwise, it's considered incomplete.
Any other NC insurance ideas?

I have state farm.

Maybe get a portable potty? and call that the bathroom? These would fit under a table, or in a closet.

Did you talk to an agent or National General directly? The under conversion endorsement/surcharge is available in NC. I would say give me a call so I could quote but I haven't gotten Natgen to appoint us in NC yet. I keep asking though.

That's unusual, as there is normally 6 requirement on the RV list, every state is the same in saying you must have 4 of the 6, Your choice, not theirs. So a bathroom is not necessary. You can squeak by with the items you have now. Getting the title changed to an RV is easy by registering it in Vt. The insurance will want to see documentation of the 4 items.

- NC is going to send someone out to check if it's an RV - apparently the list here is 4 of 7 and i think i have 5 of 7. .... but i don't know who will cover me on my insurance after the fact since the general needs me to have a bathroom. I'll start calling again when the title is back.

Wouldn't you have to move to VT to register it there/. Kinda cold for November...

Vermont does not have a residency requirement. So it will except out of state registration by mail. Although it sounds like you are making progress in NC, so that is good.

Making a little progress in NC - but y'all in this group have been so stellar. It's nice to have folks I can poke at that "get me" when it comes to this stuff. I didn't know that about VT.

When I figure out my issues I'll post my solution here, just in cae theres some other NC person scratching their heads here. Thanks so much folks.

I feel better knowing this site is here.

That's NOT true. My state only has 2 of 3.

SpoonLady- Try calling Kelly Newsome at Allstate in Leesburg FL. She's helped folks all over the country find insurance.

Can you show me that? Here's what others from Fla have said:

To convert your bus title to a motorhome/private coach you will need an Affadavit that states that you have electrical, plumbing, sleeping
and cooking facilities. ( can be just about any definition of that...) Porta-Potty, Camping stove or microwave, Bed,portable sink (aka Bucket)
and so forth.

How would that work with insurance? Are you saying that State Farm here needs 4 of 6, but in Fla. they don't?

I already showed you the last time you posted that.

http://www3.flhsmv.gov/DMV/Proc/TL/TL-13.PDF

Page 5 of the above is THE affidavit for FL bus to motohome conversion title at the florida DMV.

http://www.skoolie.net/forums/f18/fl...sion-8975.html

We only have to have ONE of the following THREE in FL-
Quote:
In the case of an individual converting their own vehicle and requesting to have the
identity changed on the title in order to have it registered and licensed as a recreational
vehicle, the customer must submit an affidavit to the tax collector. The affidavit must
certify that the unit has been converted to the extent to include one of the aforementioned
items to qualify it as a recreational vehicle.
EXAMPLE:
This is to certify that I, ______________, owner of a (Year) __________,
(Make)_______, (VIN) ___________________, hereby request the vehicle be classified
as recreational vehicle for the following reason:
( ) Installed 110 volt electrical wiring
( ) Installed LP gas piping
( ) Installed plumbing system

In NC, you just call the tag office and they send a guy out to check you off as an RV, and you get a new title in the mail saying it's an RV.

I need insurance now. I'd like to get it ASAP, but I'm afraid ill have to wait for new title.

Check off, after verifying it has been converted. Don't fall into the trap of getting the DMV to classify it and register it as an RV without a conversion. You'll play hell getting it insured as such.

If that's the case, why isn't everyione flocking to Fla. for registration?
