I've found insurance much easier to find for a PRIVATE bus than a home built bus conversion. Depends on your state of residence a lot, too.
Thanks

Do you happen to have any links to this information? Any do you have any idea what to do if you are driving to a state that requires a higher class personal license but are coming from a state that doesn't?

Thanks for this information, it's exactly what I needed

Found the answer.

1. Download Indiana state form 39771.
2. Fill out.
3. Have a cop friend sign it.
4. Go to the BMV
5. Done.

Hello. Anybody familiar with the registration requirement for a skoolie in Florida? How about insurance? I'm researching before I commit to buying a shortie and converting it. Thanks.

Weigh stations

the 40+ foot busses get way up there in weight... Anyone ever have issue by-passing weigh stations?

This ^^^

Also, School buses do not have to stop. I wasn't sure when I brought my, now privately owned, bus into Oklahoma, so I stopped anyway because I didn't want chasing down by a State Trooper asking me why I didn't stop.

The process took about 10 seconds and was painless.

All I heard on the speaker was "pull forwards about 7 feet", then "You are good to go".

So if titles as a motor home . I can have a weight certificate showing I’m under 26k and we’re good ? Even if the manufactures weight rating is 30,000

For vehicle registration, go through Virginia. It was EASY. I did it by mail, paid the taxes and in approx. 3 weeks I got the temporary registration and plates, and two weeks later, I got the sticker and formal registration. They allow you to do a two year registration as well, so that is $140, but you don't have to worry about it for a while. If you are not sure how to fill out the form, there is a walk through somewhere in this feed, but it was EASY. No requirements for build, You must have Insurance. Mine is a Thomas 2003, I sent in my original Title and copy of bill of sale, thinking I would get a different title from Virginia, but they sent it back to me with my temporary registration. It went quicker than I thought it would with COVID slowing everything down. but it did not seem to make a difference.

Exclamation NEW BUS plan for just one summer

Hi guys, I’m 18 and I plan on going on a big road trip with my buddies over the summer. We want to buy and convert a bus for the trip and want to find how we can do this legally. Logistically speaking, what is the cheapest way we could get the bus on the road, with registration, insurance, licenses (if needed), and anything else if there are. We are just going to use it for the month and most likely are going to sell it. Thank you for any help.

Start by letting us know where you are, go to the UserCP and fill out your profile. Multiple posts on the same subject is unwarranted.

Typically no special license is required when decommisioned from commercial activity.

My bad I thought it didn’t post the first one. I’m in Illinois so I know it’s a lot stricter here, but I just want to know of all the expenses before I go and purchase it.

If I were to do that for only a month or three, I would buy, maybe rent, an older gas powered motorhome for cheap.

Paint

Might want to cover or paint over the stop sign, the word “school”, and the high red n yellow lights,
If by chance you get stopped it proves you are not pretending to be a school bus

Question New Hampshire questions

I’ve read through this thread and trawled through the NH DMV site without finding answers.

I’m doing research right now. We’re looking at several possible busses but just for conversation’s sake, please assume a 2008 Thomas bus, 30k weight, air brakes, with a few nicks and bruises that we will fix as we RV-ify it.

I have driven sub-CDL weight commercial trucks before on a standard license plus medical card. I’d always understood that 0-10k lbs was standard operator’s license, 10k-26k was med card, and above that was CDL.

My questions:
  • RVs can skip even a medical card for 30k listed weight?
  • I’ve seen reference to getting an air brake endorsement on a standard car drivers’ license. How does one do this?
  • Does that endorsement carry weight in Canada? Mexico?
  • How long should I expect it to take to get the bus titled and licensed as an RV, once it has added kitchen, bath, bedroom; and all school bus-specific equipment deleted?

Thank you for your advice.

I’ve seen reference to getting an air brake endorsement on a standard car drivers’ license. How does one do this? Take a driving test in a vehicle with air brakes, they will test you in the air brakes, no air brakes no endorsement.

How long should I expect it to take to get the bus titled and licensed as an RV, once it has added kitchen, bath, bedroom; and all school bus-specific equipment deleted? The paperwork for title is quick but it takes weeks to arrive in the mail, same for a license test

From the legal code of Virginia...

"Recreational vehicle" or "RV" means a vehicle that (i) is either self-propelled or towed by a consumer-owned tow vehicle, (ii) is primarily designed to provide temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, or travel use; and (iii) complies with all applicable federal vehicle regulations and does not require a special movement permit to legally use the highways. Recreational vehicle includes motor homes, travel trailers, and camping trailers.

It seems to not require anything besides a place to lay a sleeping bag.

Can anyone find anything more onerous in the VA code ?
