Boondocking in S Dakota for Prairie Dog shooting?

Any suggestions for locations in South Dakota to either boondock or stay at a campsite? I'd like to go prairie dog shooting this summer. Ultimately a place I could set up camp and shoot under the protection of the bus canopy.

Okay, I know what a prairie dog is (I did watch Nature shows growing up and I finally seen one when we got out here to NM). Please tell me.... WHY do you shoot prairie dogs? Are they good eating?

Prairie dogs destroy ranch and crop land as well as eat loads of grass/hay/grains! Ranchers are generally good about letting you do it. When I was cowboying they would give us all the ammo we could shoot to get rid of them. I love dog hunting!

Smitty
Thanks for the info/warnings. I'm just in the info gathering stage right now. From what I read is that the ranchers want them gone. 1. because their burrows can break the legs of the cattle. 2. They carry the bubonic plague. 3. They are overpopulated in certain areas. I would need to buy a different rifle than what I have now.

My main reason is for target practice at 200+ yards. Normally I eat what I shoot but I don't think they are edible. They are considered varmints and there is no bag limit.

Tree Rats (Squirrels) are rodents too but they sure are tasty chicken fried with some cream gravy on pile of rice and some green beans... fluffy baking powder biscuits. I do not think they are "cute". I've had too many gardens damaged by tree rats. The gardens I used to put in were not for fun but to provide food for the lean winters.

I need to bake up some biscuits.... and rice... and green beans (Southern-style)... and a pot roast. No squirrel. We've only seen one squirrel since we got out here last summer. I think it was lost.

Skewers were made for prarie dog. Just have to be a little on the curious side. They don't have much of a tail to nibble on.
