You should have heard the fan clutch working. If you are driving and some thing starts roaring loud enough for everyone to look at each other and wonder wtf was that. Well that is your fan clutch engaging, trying to cool the rig down.
If you hear the roar, you should be good. No roar, no fan

Update from the shop: Fan comes on at 205ish, almost immediately shuts back off but does bring temp down
Turns out the gauge might be faulty. Temp gun and ECM read 203 when the fan comes on while the gauge reads 218.
Cold, the gauge reads 190 with temps of 180.
As engine temp gets higher, gauge gets further and further off.
Great guys. Only charged me for an hour and we were in there MUCH longer. Little Guy’s Truck and Trailer in Laramie.

Welp, armed with our incorrect gauge diagnosis and our moxy, we’re heading down 287 for the big hike tomorrow. Wish us luck, especially in that 110 degree Texas nonsense!

Damn, you will driving by so many of my favorite close to (my old) home go-to places for hiking and biking --
At least head west a couple miles on 14 when you cross it and enjoy a snack break along the Pourde River. Plenty of places to turn the bus around when you're ready -- all the trailhead parking lots can accommodate RV's & 5th wheels etc...
Enjoy the scenery!

Ship by train, plenty of room on a flatcar. A few years ago I wanted to ship a '66 Chevy K10 across the nation. $1500 to a nearby city. The truck needed to be delivered and picked up, and of course needed to be driveable.

Gentle slope all the way to Dallas
We took our well worn 1984 Ramcharger from Dallas to YellowStone NP in 2012. From Denver to Dallas is a gentle down slope all the way Southeast on US 287 to Dallas. The worst hills are behind you when you get to Denver.
Set your GPS to Denton TX and follow 287. In 2012 there was no traffic all the way to Dallas. Keep the yellow bug full of diesel and enjoy the trip!

Sorry for the delay in update. We made it home! It was slow going but uneventful. Thank you all SO MUCH for all your time and advice. It really made the difference for us on our maiden voyage.
