New York Parkways
Hello all,
Looking into joining the school bus experience. Any knowledge of the New York parkway rules (Saw Mill, Southern State, Hutchinson, etc) would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for a mini bus to covert to private use (non-commercial). Can the non-duelly vans (4 tires not 6 'cause that's what I'm interested in) drive on the parkways legally?
Best, TT

With a four wheel vehicle, you're barely talking about more than a passenger van. I'm sure your parkways allow full size buses, don't they?

I remember seeing signs that said " Vehicals over 11ft must exit"
More than once while visiting family on the news their would be tractor trailer stuck under a overpass on the sawmill.

Stu, in NJ, I saw a J.B. Hunt cabover stuck under a low overpass, clearly marked at 11'6". J.B. drivers ain't the brightest.

Don't get me started about Swift drivers. They're one step below J.B. recruiters.
There was a J.B. recruiter who, in Nashville, recruited a lizard!

Southern State Pkwy, Long Island
I drive on Southern State Pkwy frequently with my car, some of the bridges can be as low as 8'6", it is possibly taller in the middle lane at the high point of the arch, Most full size vans are OK.
Any Commercially registered vans will get pulled over.
As far as a single rear wheel minibus, you might be OK,

Lively site - thanks
Hi All - I see the Skoolie site is a lively one - coolie!
Thanks for the replies so far (keep 'em coming). For those beyond NY commercial vehicles of any size (i.e. a Honda Fit with commercial plates) are not allowed on parkways (parkway is a specific term - there are of course many other routes for all vehicles). Of course, there is a size issue as many parkway bridges are low but there are many more restrictions (no commercial writing/advertising on your vehicle regardless of plates). My main route into the city is the Saw Mill Parkway - and I'd love to own a mini bus - but don't want to be restricted to never driving on it again. I drive a GMC Suburban and get about 16MPG - so why not drive a diesel bus and get close to that and have a house on wheels?

As if NJ and NY need more reasons to avoid them.

when I was in NY last year for a christmas convention i saw a lot of 11 ft bridge signs everywhere... knowing my bus is 10'8, I didnt take any chances.. the van cutaway stuff is usually at least a foot shorter than that so they would fit fine on those 11 footers.. I used a truckers GPS which routed me all sorts of wierd ways but had me off of those parkways.. I told the GPS im 12' tall so it avoided anything under that... the routes I was told to follow often ended up in tolls but had wider taller roads.. and thats where i saw the tour busses going as well.. I was up north of the city in the white plains / Rye and surrounding areas..

No, I meant the accent from the Bronx. I can't do it (especially typing ;) ). They have funny sounding voices but use English. The Valley girl is ... like, totally,... for sure.

^This one is Puerto Rican not Italian but is done in a serious fashion and not poking fun at anyone.

Can't find the Valley Girl accent by the same woman.
