I used the same method, only i cut individual 2" long pieces and put them where the eyelets were on the tarp, used 3M super adhesive pads to secure them to the roof and then used these "clips"

I like the awning idea! How long does it take you to set it up? When we tailgate, we have been putting up quick shade type awnings ( usually 1-2) and it takes 3-4 people to put them up. It looks like your awning would be pretty quick setup!

With a step ladder , it's as simple as sliding the plastic pieces into the channel and hanging the tarp through each hole on each hook. Stick a pole in each corner, and a piece of 550 paracord in a stake in the ground. About 5 minutes max. I would put 2 cords on each cord pulling out and to the sides for a taut roof. Mine is 20x16 and it's freaking huge under there.

In 5 minutes I can have it up and have my first beer half gone. Standing on the steps I can slide it into the rail without a ladder. I leave the fasteners connected to the tarp grommets.

I ended up going with the PVC instead of the aluminum. I've got a 90" & a 48" piece butted together.

Did you go with PVC on the track or the piece that goes in the track through the rope?

I bought 2-4'aluminum sticks for $12ea, $34 shipped for both. The 8'ers were too expensive to ship and I didn't need them that long. The 3M stuff seems to hold pretty well.

sweet coach!
for awhile i used a 32'' TV on one old ass car battery with a 400w inverter. could play DVD and charge phones for about 7 hours on a charge.
the TV hangs on 2 hooks and can easily be moved out side with the cables going through the window.
i would just simply charge the battery before i head out.
now i am working on solar set-up.
as for the the awning i decided just to stick with a EZ-up!
nice and simple.
you can move it around and not be stuck on the driver side.
