Howdy Guido --- Yes. I am absolutely investing in both heat and noise barrier materials. It is essential to living with the "paint shaker". I will be putting a variety of materials under the hood, on the firewall and around & over the engine. Already have a blanket for the turbo and multiple layers around the downpipe and exhaust.

The carpet on the roof above the doghouse is strictly to reduce reflected sound on the interior. Blue Bird and other makers have used perforated sheet metal in the same area which helps, but is even worse than carpet for collecting and redistributing dust. At least with short nap carpet, you can run a hand vac over it every once in a while.

one thing I have found out with redbyrd is that dynamat is nice for sound insulation but doesnt seem to do much for heat.. I dynamatted the panel that is used as access for the transmission and rear of the engine and it is a bit quieter inside but that thing still gets hot as heck...

sure looks good to see you got your TCM mounted!. where did you put it? i was told they are "generally" water resistant but not to put it somewhere where it would get in constant water spray. i put mine on the side of the battery box.

I've heard the same thing about Dynamat...pretty good for noise, not so good for heat.

And I am hoping the Allison guy is correct about the TCM being "waterproof". It is attached to the frame but away from any direct spray. I am also a bit concerned about the connector that is used for programming & reading. It has no cover which does sound like a problem waiting to happen after a very short while. Not sure what that lead is called, but I may start looking for something to close/protect the plug part.

You have me concerned about fording any streams now!

the programming connector should be run into the cab. its OK to cut the harness and extend it. i think theres only 4 wires. i did so with WeatherPAK connectors as they are waterproof. the idea behind that connector being in the cab is if you need any adjustments, someone can read a scan tool while the bus is being driven.

Thanks Christopher...good to know. As previously noted, I am a real dunce in this area.

And I may totally re-think where the TCM is located as well. Especially after watching the morning news here. Flash flooding all over the area. Nothing unusual for Houston, so maybe trying to get that doodad a little higher up might be wise. I have twice had the electronics in my 4Runner ruined by similar rain events. Do NOT want it happening to this rig. Would like to be able to cross streams without losing the tranny due to a water related electrical issue.

Back to the drawing board.

Roger that M...saw a lot of local folks on the news this morning in need of paddles...and life jackets...and boats. I got lucky. My street can go from damp to four feet deep in a little over three minutes (I have timed it). The storm drains from half of Houston apparently all come together right here and when they are over whelmed (which is often), blow the manhole covers off at each end of the block and fill this street up from below. They look like Old Faithful.

seems to be storm drain management must always be left off of city planners' plans.. theres an area in columbus.. its flooded many times over the years.. they recently re-did the whole thing.. tore down the old buildings.. put in new stores, shops, restaraunts, etc.. even tore up the street and ran new everything.. it seemed..

however a big rain this summer flooded it just like it always has....
-Christopher

P.S. if you shou;ld happen to drench the electronics your transmission wont just go into Neutral.. it will run without the TCM in limp mode which I think is second gear... and you'll have reverse.

Began the process of re-locating both the TCM & TPS today. Thanks again to Cadillac for reminding me about how water crossings and electronics play together.

Working out a location near the top of the cowl. At about four + feet off the ground, if I get into water that deep, the tranny will likely be the least of my worries. Hmmm...maybe a snorkel is in order here.

Will update with pix after I figger it all out.

Not sure how it would do on the highway but a Duck would make a bada$$ coastal camper! Would also come in handy here in Houston during our Monsoon season. Surely SOMEONE, somewhere has built such a rig (?).

Tango,

I doubt it. Those things are very high maintenance. Heck, a Deuce and a half is high maintenance due to the air-over-hydraulic brake system. Ask me how I know...........

Have you seen Houston when it rains more than 3 drops of rain and half the city is under 3 feet of water.

Las Vegas averages something like 3" of rain a year...and they flood!

In Houston we flood too, but we routinely get 8-12"...in an hour.

Go figger(?).

Still sweating away --- Got my TCM & TPS relocated above the waterline. Don't know what I was thinking when I attached them to the frame. Duh...this is Houston. 3-4 feet of water in the street is routine.

MUCH better location. I just have to avoid any water crossings over about 5 feet. Once everything was an assured fit, I pulled it all back off and painted the brackets and firewall.

Oh...and, I got some shiny stuff in the mail...

A couple of my CAC tubes came so I just had to try a test fit. I was a bit concerned about my measurements but they fit like a glove. Just have to wait on the silicone connectors and T-Bolts now. The last piece of tubing (on the cool side) was found in my mailbox when I got back this evening, but still no connectors.

And...speaking of test fits...

The new LED's really do fit these ancient GE67 sockets!

ONWARD!
