Thanks Christopher...it was your comment on "dampness" that urged me to relocate it all. Don't know what I was thinking when I hung it all just 18" off the ground. We get "dew" here deeper than that.

And I hope to get with a Cummins tech on Monday to go over some things that should bring me closer to an actual start up. This motor has not spun for about five years. Let's hope for the best.

wonder on a diesel if you can slowly work it in?.. squirt some oil in the cylinders.. rotate by hand 2 revs... do it again a couple days later.. im assuming you can pull glowplugs or injectors on a 4BT to squirt oil in? or has it never been run where it should still have assembly lube ?

I read back to find out about your engine Tango. looks like you knew it was a good one back in post #8. It should fire up perfect or as good as one can imagine when it comes to life again.
That shouldn't need any breakin time really. Better get a comfortable seat in there for you as I can just picture it all now...lol

I'm still following along with great interest, though what you're doing is way beyond my skills. I can only dream about that kind of engine accessibility.

Excellent! --- Finally met with the Cummins tech yesterday. Great guy. Actually, he is the shop foreman at the place that went through my engine a few years back. Spent a couple of hours going over everything from what kind of tubing to use on the wastegate actuator to a bunch of tuning tips and everything in between. I knew these little motors (Cummins 4BTAA) could be pretty easily cranked up but was surprised at just how easy it is to pick up an extra 70 horsepower without giving up very much in MPG. He also volunteered to supply a number of hard to find "spare" parts to the cause.

Then after two very informative hours in my hot, sweaty shop...I had to force money into his hand. He loved the project and I want to keep this guy interested. Plus, I never, ever try to milk real professionals out of their most valuable commodities. Their time and knowledge.

Getting back with him on Friday to see what parts he has laying around.

Well Dang! --- Spent the better part of the day digging through "spare parts" at my friendly diesel shop trying to find something to make an air filter out of but struck out.

I want to build a Kenworth style air filter housing that attaches to the side of the cowl the way the Big Boys do. Just a whole lot smaller. Brought one home off a Kubota that looked close but I don't think it will work. The airflow would have to be reversed. The tech said he saw no reason that wouldn't work but...???

I also learned from the same tech that I need an adapter for the hot outlet on my turbo in order to connect the shiny new charge air cooler pipe. After a fair amount of digging I'm beginning to think what I want may be a unicorn. Will make a trip to the local Cummins shop tomorrow and see what they have to say.

Good luck with the project as the Big Boy air filter off thr cowl just sounds perfect for this. I keep thinking mini-mini kegg but wouldn't know where to find one.

Ya...I definitely think it would look good plus be easy to service and away from the engine heat. Gave some thought to building a canister from scratch, but they need to seal up absolutely air tight to do their job so the hunt continues.

I think part of the issue with sucking the air over the inside of a canister air filter toward the outside is that of surface area.. on the outside you have much more surface area.. so as the filter gets dirty, the dirt is dispersed over a larger area vs if you try and bring their over the inside of the filter first...

I like the idea of the external intake from a cold air perspective.. on the right truck it definitely looks good too

That was exactly my thought Christopher. The only saving grace might be that if I went that route, the filter itself would be substantially larger than the typical 4BT filter to begin with. Hoping the Cummins folks might be able to provide some insight but I may also contact someone like Donaldson to see what they think. Of course they will have product liability concerns but maybe I can get some straight talk from someone in engineering...if I can get through.

I ran a Donaldson on my 360 cid wrangler with snorkel. Loved that thing. Love your build !!!

Thanks leadsled --- I plan on either Donaldson or Fleetguard for the actual filter. Used to run K&N's on my motocross bikes but frankly, they suck dog eggs on a diesel. They advertise "more air flow" which is true. But only because they don't really "filter" much of anything. OK if you are running only on a track and gonna rebuild the motor every other race, not good if you are trying to protect your engine and make it last.

And my formula GP bikes?...

Filters? We don't need no stinkin filters!

ANYTHING with a Turbo needs a good filter... its not so much the diesel engine that cares.. but Dust a turbo and then come back and say no filter needed is what I tell anyone who wonders why I check and change my air fillters often..

wonder if there is some nice tractor intakes that would be compact and still look good.. or at least something that you could take to the chrome shop and have chromed if needbe.. what are you using a 3 inch or 4 inch intake pipe t othe turbo?
